Various aspects of a dimple pattern for a golf ball are disclosed herein. In one aspect, the golf balls disclosed herein can include dimples having a profile that is defined by a modified cycloid curve.

Dimple patterns for golf balls

The present disclosure is generally directed to a dimple pattern for a golf ball. In one aspect, the present disclosure is directed to a specific arrangement of first and second domains each consisting of perimeter dimples and interior dimples. The dimples have at least three different dimple diameters, including a minimum dimple diameter, a maximum dimple diameter, and at least one additional dimple diameter. In a specific aspect, the dimples having the maximum dimple diameter are only present in the first domains, the dimples having the minimum dimple diameter are only present in the second domains, and none of the perimeter dimples in the first domain are maximum dimple diameters.

Golf ball dimple plan shape defined by Clausen function

The present disclosure is directed to golf balls having improved aerodynamic performance due, at least in part, to the selection of the plan shapes of the dimples thereon. In particular, the present invention is directed to a golf ball that includes at least a portion of its dimples having a plan shape defined by a Clausen function of order 2 mapped along a simple closed path. Additionally, the present invention provides methods for designing dimples having a plan shape defined by a Clausen function of order 2 mapped along a simple closed path.

DIMPLE PATTERNS FOR GOLF BALLS

Golf balls having a low surface coverage dimple pattern arranged in a tetrahedral layout are disclosed. The dimple pattern has four substantially identical dimple sections. The dimples in each of the four dimple sections have at least three different dimple diameters, including a minimum dimple diameter, a maximum dimple diameter, and an additional (third) dimple diameter, where the additional dimple diameter substantially contributes to the overall surface coverage of the dimple pattern. The resulting dimple pattern has a low dimple surface coverage and high diameter disparities among the dimples, which helps to reduce the flight of the golf ball while providing improved aerodynamic consistency.
