In a golf ball having a core, envelope layer, intermediate layer and cover, the (core diameter)/(ball diameter) value falls within a particular range, the core has a specific hardness profile, and the Shore C hardness relationships among the core center and surface hardnesses and the surface hardnesses of the envelope layer-encased sphere, intermediate layer-encased sphere and ball satisfy the following conditions:
core surface hardness<surface hardness of envelope layer-encased sphere<surface hardness of intermediate layer-encased sphere>ball surface hardness,  (1)
(surface hardness of envelope layer-encased sphere)−(core center hardness)≥28.  (2) Also, the envelope layer, intermediate layer and cover have respective thicknesses which satisfy the condition:
cover thickness<intermediate layer thickness envelope layer thickness.  (3) This ball enables mid-level and skilled amateur golfers to achieve superior distances on driver shots and on iron shots, and moreover has a soft yet good feel at impact.

GOLF BALL

An object of the present invention is to provide a novel golf ball having excellent spin performance on approach shots. The present invention provides a golf ball comprising a golf ball body, and a paint film formed on a surface of the golf ball body and composed of at least one layer, wherein a base resin constituting an outermost layer of the paint film includes a polyurethane, and the polyurethane has a loss elastic modulus (E″) of 0.2×10.sup.8 Pa or more at −50° C. and a loss tangent (tan δ) having a peak temperature of 0° C. or less, obtained by measuring dynamic viscoelasticity of the polyurethane under specific conditions.

Golf balls having covers made of thermoplastic polyurethane compositions are provided. Multi-piece golf balls can be made. Polyurethane primer coatings and polyurethane top-coatings are applied to the thermoplastic polyurethane cover. Different coating methods can be used. Isocyanate-rich and polyol-rich polyurethane coatings can be applied. In one embodiment, the golf ball can be treated with a multi-functional isocyanate prior to applying the coatings. The polyurethane cover composition and surface coatings can further include catalysts, ultraviolet (UV)—light stabilizers, and other additives. Heat is used to cure the coatings. The coating methods have many benefits and the finished balls have good physical properties.

Golf ball

A golf ball has a plurality of dimples 12 and a land 14 on a surface thereof. The golf ball further has a large number of minute projections 18 formed on surfaces of the dimples 12 and the land 14. The surface of the golf ball has an arithmetic average height Sa of not less than 0.5 μm and not greater than 30 μm. An average value Hav of heights H of the minute projections 18 is not less than 0.5 μm and not greater than 50 μm. A ratio Pp of a sum of areas of all the minute projections 18 to a surface area of a phantom sphere of the golf ball is not less than 7%. An average value Dav of diameters D of the minute projections 18 is not less than 5 μm and not greater than 50 μm.

GOLF BALL

In a golf ball comprising a core, a cover layer, an intermediate layer between the core and the cover layer, the cover layer is formed of a resin material composed primarily of polyurethane or polyurea, a sphere obtained by encasing the core with the intermediate layer (intermediate layer-encased sphere) has a lightness (Li value) in the L*a*b* color space of at least 25 on its surface, and the cover layer has a visible light transmittance of at least 0.6%. The golf ball has a surface with a distinctive aesthetic appearance and retains both a good spin performance and a good scuff resistance, making it useful as a ball for professional and skilled amateur golfers.
