Embodiments of golf club heads, golf clubs, and methods to manufacture golf club heads and golf clubs are generally described herein. In one example, a golf club head includes a body portion comprising a material having a first density and an interior cavity having a filler material therein comprising a material having a second density. The golf club head also includes a first mass portion coupled to the body portion and a second mass portion coupled to the hosel portion. The first mass portion and the second mass portion comprise a material having a third density. A port on the body portion is configured to receive the first mass portion. At least a portion of the first mass portion is below a horizontal midplane of the body portion. The first density is greater than the second density. The third density is greater than the first density. A distance between a portion of the first mass portion and the hosel portion is substantially greater than a distance between the portion of the first mass portion and the toe portion edge. The first mass portion and the second mass portion have at least one different physical property. Other examples and embodiments may be described and claimed.

Localized heat treatment

Embodiments are described herein of a bifurcated heat treatment apparatus and methods for localized heat treatment of a golf club hosel or golf club head. The heat treating method comprises a bifurcated process in which the golf club head is treated in the first heating unit via induction heating and then moved to the second heating unit for convection heating. Both steps are to localize the hosel heat treatment. The heat treatment apparatus may also include a cooling component, such as a heat sink, to ensure the body of the club head remains at the correct temperature during the second heating stage when the hosel is heated in isolation. The overall bifurcated method and apparatus of the localized heat treatment leads to a hosel or golf club head with at least two different hardness values to allow for manipulation of the material without cracking or fracturing.

The reinforcement element is made of a material having a hardness ranging from HRC15 to HRC55 measured by Rockwell Hardness Test. The reinforcement element is put into the recess in the blank of head, and an inner surface of the recess and the reinforcement element are combined securely with each other completely by a welding process. The blank of head combined with the reinforcement element is put into a mold, is heated to 700° C. to 1100° C., and is applied with a co-forging process to form an eutectic bonding by thermocompression.

Embodiments of golf club heads comprising a nanocomposite to attenuate sound of the club head are described herein. The nanocomposite comprises graphene and a polymer. The graphene can be in the form of a powder, where the graphene is suspended within the polymer. The nanocomposite can be disposed within an interior surface of the club head. The nanocomposite can be applied to selected portions of the club head such as behind the strike face. The nanocomposite comprising graphene and the polymer can provide an alternative filler material over homogenous materials to attenuate the sound to provide a pleasing sound and feel to a golfer.

Embodiments of golf club heads, golf clubs, and methods to manufacture golf club heads and golf clubs are generally described herein. A golf club head includes a face portion having an outer face portion surrounding a face opening and a face insert portion coupled to the outer face portion to close the face opening. A front groove and a back groove are located at a front surface and a back surface of the face portion, respectively. The front and back grooves define an inner area portion for striking a golf ball. The front and back grooves are configured to enhance deflection and rebounding of the inner area portion during impact with the golf ball. The front groove has a groove length that is the same or about the same as a groove length of the back groove. Other examples and embodiments may be described and claimed.

Iron-type golf club heads can have a high-COR face portion with an optimized face thickness profile that maximizes selected performance characteristics, such as ball speed, ball spin or ball trajectory angle, while maintaining certain required constraint properties, such as keeping stresses low for durability. Such face portions can have certain regions that are significantly stiffer than other regions of the face portion. For example, a low region of the face portion can be significantly stiffer than a high region of the face, or one quadrant of the face can be significantly stiffer than other quadrants of the face. Disclosed face thickness profiles can feature irregularly shaped contours that maximize the distribution of material in the face for optimal performance characteristics within defined constraints.

In one example, a golf club head may include a body portion having an interior cavity, a toe portion with a toe portion edge, a heel portion with a heel portion edge, a front portion, a back portion with a back wall portion, a top portion with a top portion edge, and a sole portion with a sole portion edge. The back wall portion may include an upper back wall portion, a lower back wall portion, and a ledge portion extending from the upper back wall portion to the lower back wall portion. The golf club head may include a plurality of mass portions. Each mass portion may include a first end defining an outer surface portion of the back wall portion and a second end opposite the first end. For each mass portion, a portion of the interior cavity located vertically below the ledge portion and vertically above the mass portion between the first end of the mass portion and the second end of the mass portion is filled with a polymer material. The second mass portion includes a top portion and a bottom portion oriented relative to each other at an angle at least partially corresponding to a contour of a portion of the toe portion edge.
