The present invention discloses a pulsed electric field propulsion system for spacecraft. The system includes a capacitor stack comprising an array of supercapacitors. Solid-state electronic circuits generate high time-rate-of-change currents and pulsed electric fields in pulse coils. The pulse coils direct the electric fields onto separated electric charges stored in the capacitor stack. The resulting unidirectional Lorentz Forces thereby generate thrust without reaction mass. Reaction momentum is carried away by Poynting Vector fields in conformity with the currently understood principles of electrodynamics. The design is scalable down to micro-chip sized thrusters.

The novelty of this invention lies not only with the shaping, but the advantage of such shaping, which includes producing a smaller form factor electromagnet for the same desired magnetic field strength, when compared to a conventional electromagnet. It will be appreciated that a range of devices including electromagnets, based on such fractal shaping, are additionally novel and include but are not limited to solenoid switches, relays, and other devices in which the fractal electromagnets are used to make a change in state of some device.

A gradient coil for an MRI apparatus is disclosed, comprising a main coil layer and a shielding coil layer. The shielding coil layer is arranged around the main coil layer, which includes an X, Y, and Z main coil set, and an X and Y end shielding coil set. The X end shielding coil set is connected in series with the X main coil set and used to form a shielding magnetic field in a direction opposite to the X direction. The Y end shielding coil set is connected in series with the Y main coil set and used to form a shielding magnetic field in the opposite direction to the Y direction. In the Z direction, the X end shielding coil set and Y end shielding coil set are disposed outside an imaging region enclosed by the main coil layer.

The method comprises generating a magnetic field; exposing a material to the magnetic field, and determining the optimum settings of the magnetic field parameters for the particular material. The magnetic field may be time varying or time invariant. Various properties of the magnetic field can be altered to determine the optimum settings for altering the material properties, including the amplitude, frequency, and waveform. In one embodiment, a method for improving the conductivity of a transmission line is provided, comprising: providing a high voltage electrical transmission line; temporarily installing a magnetic field generator along at least a portion of the transmission line; and generating a pulsed magnetic field around at least a portion of the transmission line using the magnetic field generator and simultaneously running a current through the transmission line.
