Methods and apparatus for isolation barrier with magnetics. In an example arrangement, an apparatus includes an isolation laminate including a dielectric core having a first surface and a second surface opposed to the first surface; at least one conductive layer configured as a first transformer coil overlying the first surface; a first dielectric layer surrounding the at least one conductive layer; a first magnetic layer overlying the at least one conductive layer; at least one additional conductive layer configured as a second transformer coil overlying the second surface; a second dielectric layer surrounding the at least one additional conductive layer; and a second magnetic layer overlying the at least one additional conductive layer. Methods for forming the isolation barriers and additional apparatus arrangements are also disclosed.

Matrix Transformer
A matrix transformer includes a magnetic core structure and windings. The magnetic core structure includes magnetic legs and a pair of spaced-apart magnetic plates that are connected together by the magnetic legs. The windings are wrapped around the magnetic legs and have electric current flow directions which cause magnetic fluxes within the magnetic core structure that cancel out in a middle region of each magnetic plate thereby leaving the middle region of each magnetic plate to be a magnetic field-free zone. A first one of the magnetic plates has a recess extending through its middle region within its magnetic field-free zone. A cooling pin connected to a heat sink is insertable through the recess.

A planar transformer includes a magnetic core having an internal opening. A plurality of high current capacity windings are disposed within the internal opening. These high current capacity windings have a length, a width and a thickness. Each winding is formed as an open loop having adjacent first and second end portions. There is at least one primary winding and one secondary winding. The primary winding and/or secondary winding may be high current capacity windings. A first terminal lead is electrically interconnected to multiple adjacent first end portions and a second terminal lead is electrically interconnected to multiple second end portions. Both the first terminal lead and said second terminal lead have a length, a width and a thickness measured with the thickness being less than either the terminal lead length or the terminal lead width.

An electronic device has a primary coil 10; a secondary coil 20 disposed to face the primary coil 10; a primary-side electronic element 110 electrically connected to the primary coil 10; and a secondary-side electronic element 210 electrically connected to the secondary coil 20. The primary coil 10 has a primary-side first coil 10a that is provided on another side of the secondary coil 20, and a primary-side second coil 10b that is provided on one side of the primary-side first coil 10a. A connecting part 19 connecting the primary-side first coil 10a and the primary-side second coil 10b is provided and passes through a space of the secondary coil 20.

The multilevel lamination structure includes a first patterned conductive feature having multiple turns in a first level to form a first winding coupled to at least one of the first conductive leads in a first circuit, a second patterned conductive feature having multiple turns in a different level to form a second winding coupled to at least one of the second conductive leads in a second circuit isolated from the first circuit, and a conductive shield trace having multiple turns in a second level spaced apart from and between the first patterned conductive feature and the second patterned conductive feature, the conductive shield trace coupled in the first circuit.

A planar transformer may include a primary printed circuit board (PCB) having at least a hole in which a first core and a second core are inserted and including a coil pattern, a secondary PCB having at least a hole in which the first core and the second core are inserted and including a coil pattern, and a heat dissipation plate disposed between the primary PCB and the secondary PCB and including at least a hole in which the first core and the second core are inserted.
