Electrical key support membrane

Keyboards and other input devices are provided with membranes that extend under the keycaps or buttons. The membranes are flexible and can support conductive structures, traces, and electrical switch connections to enable effective key switches, lighting, and fluid-tightness for the keyboard. The flexible membrane is positioned near the keycaps to prevent ingress of fluids and debris into the lower portions of the key assemblies. In some cases, the flexible membrane also provides support for an interstitial layer that extends between keycaps.

A button unit is suspended vertically and has a button body with an actuating surface and a shaft extending downwardly therefrom. An X-Y sensor unit is arranged below the button body for detecting X-Y positions on the actuating surface. The X-Y sensor unit has one opening such that the shaft can move therethrough. One transfer element is elastically suspended below the shaft and moved downwardly upon downward movement of the shaft. A Z sensor unit is arranged below the transfer element. The Z sensor unit has a detection element for detecting downward movement of the transfer element. The X-Y sensor unit may include a capacitive sensor. The Z sensor unit may include an inductive sensor, a capacitive sensor, or a magnetic sensor. The shaft and the extension may include a translucent material to form a light guide for illuminating the button body via a light source.

Method for manufacturing an actuator switch

A method of making an actuator switch is disclosed. One method including: receiving a threshold amount of pressure on a top surface of a flexible film; in response to receiving the threshold amount of pressure, contacting a first electrode with a second electrode; in response to receiving the threshold amount of pressure, generating i) a first capacitive connection between a row electrode and the second electrode and ii) a second capacitive connection between a column electrode and the second electrode; in response to the first electrode contacting the second electrode, generating, by a piezoelectric actuator, haptic feedback; and in response to the generating the first capacitive connection and the second capacitive connection, providing an input detection signal.
