System, methods, and other embodiments described herein relate to safely activating a fuel cell (FC) within a generator. In one embodiment, a method includes initiating a test for sensitive systems of a generator using backup power including a battery. The method also includes powering an FC and a direct current (DC) converter within the generator to an operational level using the battery, wherein the DC converter stabilizes a circuit fed by the FC. The method also includes, upon successfully completing the test and powering the FC and the DC converter, energizing a load inverter after completing a non-critical sequence that controls support systems of the generator, wherein the DC converter stabilizes energy between the FC, the battery, and the load inverter.

Methods and systems are described for optimizing water discharge in fuel cell vehicles. The system includes a fuel cell stack, a blower for purging water from the fuel cell stack and a controller. The controller detects that an ambient temperature satisfies a threshold temperature. The controller determines the fuel cell vehicle is approaching a stopping location. The controller calculates a water discharge time prediction necessary to purge excess water from the fuel cell stack while the fuel cell vehicle is operating in response to detecting that the ambient temperature satisfies the threshold temperature and the fuel cell vehicle is approaching the stopping location. The water discharge time prediction is calculated based on the blower operating while the fuel cell stack is in at least one of an idle state and a stopped state as the fuel cell vehicle approaches the stopping location.

Methods and apparatus for detecting electrical short circuits in fuel cell stacks are provided. The methods involve supplying a reactant and an inert gas to a fuel cell stack and measuring the open circuit voltage of fuel cell assemblies in the fuel cell stack. The sensitivity of the methods can be adjusted to detect an electrical short circuit having a resistance at or below a particular threshold short-circuit resistance value, by using a suitable reactant concentration in the method. The methods can include determining a set-point reactant concentration that can be used to detect an electrical short circuit having a resistance at or below a particular threshold short-circuit resistance value.
