Disclosed are: a polymer electrolyte membrane which can guarantee the production of a membrane-electrode assembly having excellent mechanical properties without a decrease in performance, such as in ionic conductivity, and thus having a high enough durability to achieve at least 30,000 wet/dry cycles as measured according to the NEDO protocol; a membrane-electrode assembly including the polymer electrolyte membrane; and a method for measuring the durability of the membrane-electrode assembly. The polymer electrolyte membrane according to the present invention comprises a composite layer including: a porous support having multiple pores; and ionomers filling the pores, and has an MD internal tearing strength of 150 N/mm or greater, a TD internal tearing strength of 150 N/mm or greater, a stab initial strain of 8% or less, and a stab final strain of 10% or less.

A membrane-electrode assembly according to the present invention comprises: a first electrode; a second electrode; and a polymer electrolyte membrane between the first and second electrodes, wherein the first electrode has a first surface facing the polymer electrolyte membrane and a second surface opposite the first surface, the first surface having a first patterned structure, and the second surface having a second patterned structure.

The present invention relates to a method for producing a catalyst for an electrochemical cell, wherein: a graphited porous carbon material is treated with an oxygen-containing plasma or an aqueous medium containing an oxidising agent, at least one noble metal compound is deposited on the treated carbon material, the impregnated carbon material is brought into contact with a reducing agent such that the noble metal compound is reduced to a metallic noble metal.

The present invention relates to a method for producing a catalyst for an electrochemical cell, wherein: a graphited porous carbon material is treated with an oxygen-containing plasma or an aqueous medium containing an oxidising agent, at least one noble metal compound is deposited on the treated carbon material, the impregnated carbon material is brought into contact with a reducing agent such that the noble metal compound is reduced to a metallic noble metal.

Catalyst-coated membrane having a laminate structure
A catalyst-coated membrane (CCM) for use in a water electrolyser, having a laminate structure comprising: a first layer comprising a first membrane component having a cathode catalyst layer disposed on a first face thereof; a second layer comprising a second membrane component having an anode catalyst layer disposed on a first face thereof; and an intermediate layer disposed between the first and second layers, comprising a third membrane component having a recombination catalyst layer disposed on a first face thereof is disclosed. The CCM is useful within a water electrolyser. The recombination catalyst layer reduces the risk associated with hydrogen crossover and allows thinner membranes with lower resistance to be used.
