MEMS TUNABLE VCSEL POWERED SWEPT SOURCE OCT FOR 3D METROLOGY APPLICATIONS
Disclosed is an optical probe system that is capable of high speed, high precision, and high resolution 3D digitalization of engineered objects. The 3D dimensional data of the engineered object is measured using a swept source optical coherence tomography system with improved speed, spatial resolutions, and depth range. Also disclosed is a type of coordinate measurement machine (CMM) that is capable of performing high speed, high resolution, and non-contact measurement of engineered objects. The mechanic stylus in the touch-trigger probe of a conventional CMM is replaced with an optical stylus with reconfigurable diameter and length. The distance from the center of the optical stylus to the measurement probe is optically adjusted to match the height of the object to be measured quickly, which eliminates one dimensional movement of the probe and greatly improves the productivity.
Semiconductor Optical Element
An embodiment semiconductor optical device includes an optical waveguide including a core, and an active layer extending in the waveguide direction of the optical waveguide for a predetermined distance and arranged in a state in which the active layer can be optically coupled to the core. The core and the active layer are arranged in contact with each other. The core is formed of a material with a refractive index of about 1.5 to 2.2, such as SiN, for example. In addition, the core is formed to a thickness at which a higher-order mode appears. The higher-order mode is an E.sub.12 mode, for example.
EFFICIENT GENERATION OF SPATIALLY-RESTRUCTURABLE HIGH-ORDER HG-MODES IN A LASER CAVITY
A vertical external cavity surface emitting laser (VECSEL) based system in a linear single cavity configuration is configured to deliver light in higher-order Hermite-Gaussian transverse modes with Watt-level output power. Simultaneous and independent lasing of spatially-restructurable multiple high-order transverse modes that are collinearly-propagating at the output of such laser cavity is facilitated with the use of an optical pumping scheme devised to control positions of location at which the gain medium of the system is pumped (e.g., locations of focal spots of multiple pump beams on the gain-medium chip). An external astigmatic mode converter is utilized to convert such high-order Hermite-Gaussian modes into corresponding Laguerre-Gaussian modes.

Integrated-Optics-Based External-Cavity Laser Configured for Mode-Hop-Free Wavelength Tuning
Aspects of the present disclosure describe systems, methods and structures including an integrated-optics-based externa-cavity laser configured for mode-hop-free wavelength tuning having an increased continuous tuning range with an ultra-narrow linewidth by increasing tuning sensitivity. Ultra-narrow linewidth is provided by extending cavity length with a multi-pass resonator based filter that may advantageously include tunable microring resonators that enable single-mode oscillation while contributing to the optical length of the laser with multiple passes of light through the ring(s) per roundtrip in the laser cavity. Further aspects of the present disclosure describe systems, methods, and structures exhibiting an enhanced “tuning sensitivity”—defined by a continuous wavelength shift per induced cavity phase shift by a phase section. Such tuning sensitivity is increased by approximately a factor of 3 for synchronous tuning of phase section and ring resonators as compared to tuning phase section only.
Electrically pumped vertical cavity laser
Disclosed is an electrically pumped vertical cavity laser structure operating in the mid-infrared region, which has demonstrated room-temperature continuous wave operation. This structure uses an interband cascade gain region, two distributed mirrors, and a low-loss refractive index waveguide. A preferred embodiment includes at least one wafer bonded GaAs-based mirror.
OPTICAL COMMUNICATION INTERFACE
Embodiments of the present disclosure include optical transmitters and transceivers with improved reliability. In some embodiments, the optical transmitters are used in network devices, such as in conjunction with a network switch. In one embodiment, lasers are operated at low power to improve reliability and power consumption. The output of the laser may be modulated by a non-direct modulator and received by integrated optical components, such as a modulator and/or multiplexer. The output of the optical components may be amplified by a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). Various advantageous configurations of lasers, optical components, and SOAs are disclosed. In some embodiments, SOAs are configured as part of a pluggable optical communication module, for example.
Multi-wavelength semiconductor comb lasers
Examples disclosed herein relate to multi-wavelength semiconductor comb lasers. In some examples disclosed herein, a multi-wavelength semiconductor comb laser may include a waveguide included in an upper silicon layer of a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate. The comb laser may include a quantum dot (QD) active gain region above the SOI substrate defining an active section in a laser cavity of the comb laser and a dispersion tuning section included in the laser cavity to tune total cavity dispersion of the comb laser.
Narrow-linewidth tunable external cavity laser
A narrow-linewidth tunable external cavity laser includes, sequentially arranged along an optical path, a laser gain chip, a collimating lens, a bandpass filter, a tunable filter, and an output cavity surface. The laser gain chip includes a first end surface and a second end surface positioned along the optical path. The first end surface is further away from the collimating lens and is coated with a highly reflective film to form an external cavity with the output cavity surface.
Method and system for providing directional light sources with broad spectrum
A system and method for providing laser diodes with broad spectrum is described. GaN-based laser diodes with broad or multi-peaked spectral output operating are obtained in various configurations by having a single laser diode device generating multiple-peak spectral outputs, operate in superluminescene mode, or by use of an RF source and/or a feedback signal. In some other embodiments, multi-peak outputs are achieved by having multiple laser devices output different lasers at different wavelengths.
