Athermal angular output by combining a laser with a grating based antenna
An internal laser component of an optical device comprises: a waveguide that defines a guided mode of a first optical wave characterized by a first propagation constant associated with a first effective refractive index. An optical antenna grating comprises: a waveguide that defines a guided mode of a second optical wave characterized by a second propagation constant associated with a second effective refractive index, and a grating structure configured to emit a portion of the second optical wave in a selected direction. The internal laser component and the optical antenna grating are configured to provide a relationship between the first effective refractive index and the second effective refractive index such that the selected direction is substantially insensitive to a change in a temperature of a thermal environment in which the internal laser component and the optical antenna grating are thermally coupled.
Broadband back mirror for a photonic chip
A semiconductor laser has a mirror formed in a gain chip. The mirror can be placed in the gain chip to provide a broadband reflector to support multiple lasers using the gain chip. The mirror can also be placed in the gain chip to have the semiconductor laser be more efficient or more powerful by changing an optical path length of the gain of the semiconductor laser.
Coupled-cavity VCSELs for enhanced modulation bandwidth
Coupled-cavity vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) are provided by the present disclosure. The coupled-cavity VCSEL can comprise a VCSEL having a first mirror, a gain medium disposed above the first mirror, and a second mirror disposed above the gain medium, wherein a first cavity is formed by the first mirror and the second mirror. A second cavity is optically coupled to the VCSEL and configured to reflect light emitted from the VCSEL back into the first cavity of the VCSEL. In some embodiments, the second cavity can be an external cavity optically coupled to the VCSEL through a coupling component. In some embodiments, the second cavity can be integrated with the VCSEL to form a monolithic coupled-cavity VCSEL. A feedback circuit can control operation of the coupled-cavity VCSEL so the output comprises a target high frequency signal.

EXTERNAL RESONANT LASER MODULE AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURING EXTERNAL RESONANT LASER MODULE
The laser module includes a QCL element, a diffraction grating unit, a first lens holder, a second lens holder, and a mount member. The fourth mounting portion of the mount member is provided with a placement hole into which the protruding portion of the diffraction grating unit is inserted. The placement hole is longer than the protruding portion so that the protruding portion can be slid in the X-axis direction relative to the placement hole. A wall surface for positioning the diffraction grating unit is provided between the third mounting portion and the fourth mounting portion. The diffraction grating unit includes a positioning surface facing the wall surface. The diffraction grating unit is fixed to the fourth mounting portion in a state where the protruding portion is inserted into the placement hole and the positioning surface is in surface contact with the wall surface.
EXTERNAL RESONANT LASER MODULE
The laser module includes a QCL element, a diffraction grating unit, a first lens holder, a second lens holder, and a mount member. The first mounting portion has a first top surface on which the first lens holder is mounted via an adhesive layer. The third mounting portion has a third top surface on which the second lens holder is mounted via an adhesive layer. The second mounting portion has a second top surface located higher than the first top surface and the third top surface, a first side surface connecting the second top surface and the first top surface, and a second side surface connecting the second top surface and the third top surface. A notch extending from the second top surface to the first top surface or the third top surface is formed in at least one of the first side surface and the second side surface.
