Method and apparatus for switching current

A device, system, and method is disclosed for improving safety of a power system. For example, a differential current may be detected using at least one sensor by temporarily enabling sampling of current flowing through one or more conductors. Additionally, current flow may be temporarily altered in order to sample current in a system. The measurements may be handled locally and/or remotely and appropriate actions may be taken to enhance the overall safety of the system.

A cathode of the first SCR may be connected to an anode of the third SCR. A cathode of the second SCR and a cathode of the third SCR may be connected to a ground. Methods of operating a circuit interrupter and a circuit are also provided.

In aspects of the present disclosure, a circuit interrupter includes a housing, a conductive path, a switch which selectively interrupts the conductive path, sensor(s), memory, and a controller within the housing. The sensor(s) measure electrical characteristic(s) of the conductive path. The memory stores an arc detection program that implements a machine learning model and includes a field-updatable program portion and a non-field-updatable program portion, where the field-updatable program portion includes program parameters used by the non-field-updatable program portion to decide between presence or absence of an arc fault. The controller executes the arc detection program to compute input data for the machine learning model based on the sensor measurements, decide between presence of an arc event or absence of an arc event based on the input data, and cause the switch to interrupt the conductive path when the decision indicates presence of an arc event.

The leakage protection plug of this disclosure has both leakage protection and timing functions.

The apparatus includes two powered lines providing output electricity to an electrical distribution system and a shared neutral line providing a grounded neutral to the first and second powered lines. The apparatus is configured for detecting when an open neutral condition is present in the split phase power system by determining when a power current is present on one or both of the first and second powered lines while a return current is not present on the neutral line; and in response to detecting that the open neutral condition is present, causing an interrupter to interrupt the power supplied by the first and second powered lines or to generate a signal indicating an open condition.
