The protection zone includes a distribution bus and a plurality of feeder circuit protection devices coupled between the distribution bus and a plurality of loads. The method includes determining an electric current flowing through each source and tie circuit protection device, determining whether any of the feeder circuit protection devices is outputting a ZSI blocking signal, and controlling operation of the plurality of source and tie circuit protection devices according to an enhanced partial differential protection scheme based on a combination of the determined currents through the source and tie circuit protection devices and the determination of whether any of the feeder circuit protection devices is outputting a ZSI blocking signal.

Electric power distribution sectionalizing in high-risk areas using wireless fault sensors
Disclosed herein are systems and methods for safe electric power delivery protection within a high-risk area while maintaining electric power availability in non-faulted areas. Fault signals from wireless sensors are used at a recloser to block reclosing onto a faulted high-risk zone. Fault signals from wireless sensors are used at a recloser to permit reclosing when the reclosing operation will not close onto a fault location within the high-risk zone. Portions of the power system may be selectively openable by sectionalizers. When a fault is reported by a wireless sensor as being on a portion of the power system selectively openable, a recloser may be permitted to attempt a reclose operation affecting the high-risk zone and the selectively openable portion.
Zone selective interlocking (ZSI) power distribution operating a ZSI power distribution system
Power distribution systems and methods are described. In one example, a method of determining by a first circuit protection device in a zone selective interlocking (ZSI) system whether to output a blocking signal to a second circuit protection device in the ZSI system is described. The method includes detecting, by a current rate of change sensor, a rate of change of a current flowing through the first circuit protection device. A trip unit receives a current rate of change signal from the current rate of change sensor. The current rate of change signal is proportional to the detected rate of change of the current flowing through the first circuit protection device. The trip unit determines whether to output the blocking signal to the second circuit protection device based, at least in part, on the current rate of change signal.
Power distribution system capable of automatic fault detection in a distributed manner and method thereof
A power distribution system capable of automatic fault detection includes a lateral, a switch unit and a feeder terminal unit. The switch unit includes a circuit breaker coupled for transmitting electrical power to the lateral when making electrical connection, and a protection relay to provide a control signal that causes the circuit breaker to break electrical connection upon determining that the magnitude of a current provided by the circuit breaker is greater than a threshold current value. The feeder terminal unit detects whether or not the protection relay generates the control signal, so as to determine whether or not a fault has occurred in the lateral.
Single phase fault isolation and restoration for power distribution network
A method for controlling a power distribution network includes receiving, by an electronic processor, a fault indication associated with a fault in the power distribution network from a first isolation device of a plurality of isolation devices. The processor identifies a first subset of a plurality of phases associated with the fault indication and a second subset of the plurality of phases not associated with the fault indication. The first and second subsets each include at least one member. The processor identifies an upstream isolation device upstream of the fault. The processor identifies a downstream isolation device downstream of the fault. The processor sends an open command to the downstream isolation device for each phase in the first subset. Responsive to the first isolation device not being the upstream isolation device, the processor sends a close command to the first isolation device for each phase in the first subset.
Technologies for zonal fault protection of DC distribution systems
Technologies for detecting a fault location in a DC electrical distribution system include a bus protection unit that monitors a DC electrical bus. The bus protection unit includes at least one sensor to produce sensor data indicative of one or more characteristics of the DC electrical bus monitored by the bus protection unit. The bus protection unit monitors the sensor data, determines whether a fault has occurred based on the sensor data, and determines whether the fault occurred within a bus zone defined by the DC electrical bus in response to determining that the fault has occurred. Further, the bus detection unit trips isolation devices within the bus zone in response to a determination that the fault occurred within the bus zone or a communication from another bus protection unit indicating the fault has occurred within the bus zone. The bus protection unit transmits a bus fault indication signal to another bus protection unit in response to a determination that the fault has occurred.
