METHODS, DEVICES, AND SYSTEMS FOR DISTRIBUTED MONITORING BASED ADAPTIVE DIAGNOSIS OF POWER ANOMALIES IN A POWER NETWORK

Methods, devices and systems for detecting an anomaly in a power network are described. A method for detecting an anomaly in a power network includes determining a baseline power usage in the power network, receiving data indicative of an active power usage in the power network, detecting an anomaly based on a difference between the baseline power usage and the active power usage, isolating a fault for an element in the power network, responsive to detecting the anomaly, and transmitting fault isolation information indicating the fault to a user device. Related devices and systems may perform operations of the method described herein.

Non-Three-Phase Fault Isolation and Restoration Systems

A smart switch allows distributed generators to “ride through” non-three-phase faults by very quickly detecting a non-three-phase phase fault, locating the fault, identifying the “responsive sectionalizer switches” that will be involved in clearing or isolating the fault, and selecting one of the responsive sectionalizer switches to direct back-feed tie switch operations. The responsive sectionalizer switches trip only the faulted phase(s), and the selected sectionalizer switch instructs a back-feed tie switch to close to back-feed the distributed generators prior to conducting the typical fault response operation. This typically occurs within about three cycles, and is completed before the normal fault clearing and isolation procedures, which momentarily disconnect all three phases to the distributed generators from the normally connected feeder breaker. The looped connection to an alternate feeder breaker during these operations allows the distributed generators to “ride through” the normal fault clearing and isolation procedures.

Bus terminal for automation system and method for monitoring a current-supply network

Measuring data are provided for monitoring a current-supply network, based on one or a plurality of measured electrical quantities of the current-supply network. A time signal is assigned to the measuring data. The measuring data are inspected for the occurrence of one a plurality of predetermined events. Based on determining the occurrence of predetermined event or events, corresponding event data based on the measuring data are generated. A time stamp is conferred to the event data, where the time stamp is based on a link of a synchronized clock time provided by a clock and the time signal assigned to the measuring data. User data are generated from the event data comprising the time stamp, and transmitted via a communication network.

Power system performance based on updated performance characteristics of a protection device

Described herein are improvements for a power system by operating the power system using updated performance characteristics for a protection device. In one example, a method includes operating the power system based on a first operational curve for a first protection device of the one or more protection devices. The first operational curve indicates conditions upon which the first protection device will trip. The method also provides obtaining trip information describing conditions that cause the first protection device to trip at each of one or more trip occurrences during operation of the power system. The method further provides adjusting the first operational curve to generate an adjusted first operational curve that reflects the trip information and operating the power system based on the adjusted first operational curve.

A processor receives an indication of a fault from a first isolation device. The processor sends a first open command to a downstream isolation device downstream of the fault, identifies a tie-in isolation device, and identifies a line section without current monitoring positioned between the tie-in isolation device and the downstream isolation device. The line section has a plurality of line segments, each having a load rating. The processor receives incoming and exiting current measurements for the line section and estimates a first current load for each of the line segments in the line section based on the incoming and exiting current measurements and the load ratings. The processor selects an intermediate isolation device between the tie-in isolation device and the downstream isolation device based on the first current loads, sends a second open command to the intermediate isolation device, and sends a close command to the tie-in isolation device.
