CONTROLLER AND DRIVE CIRCUIT FOR ELECTRIC MOTORS
An electric motor system is described. The electric motor system includes a drive circuit including an inverter configured to supply variable frequency current and a contactor configured to supply line frequency current. The electric motor system also includes an electric motor coupled to the drive circuit wherein the electric motor is communicatively coupled to a controller. The controller is configured to control the inverter to supply variable frequency current to the electric motor, thereby operating the electric motor at a motor speed, and determine, based upon at least one input parameter, a maximum potential motor speed the inverter can achieve. The controller is also configured to receive a command to operate the electric motor at line frequency current and control the drive circuit to transition from supplying variably frequency current to supplying line frequency current before the maximum potential motor speed the inverter can achieve is reached.
Failure Detection in Small AC Motors
A system and method for detecting failures in a single-phase AC motor is disclosed. After a startup sequence, the motor is unpowered and a measurement is taken across terminals in the motor to detect a signal from residual magnetism in the iron core of the rotor. If the rotor was successfully started, the signal will be above a predetermined threshold. The signal may be measured across either a main stator winding or a start stator winding. Where the signal does not exceed the predetermined threshold, the startup sequence may be re-initiated and/or a failure message may be sent to an operator.
Methods and devices for universal braking, safe start protection, and other motor control for alternating current devices
A circuit for a smart safety system includes an electrical input connection to obtain power from a power source and an electrical output connection to regulate the power to an AC motor. The circuit also includes an adjustable DC power supply. One or more electronic switching devices regulate electricity output to the AC motor. The circuit has one more functional states including: a first state, activated via a first electrical signal, in which electricity is supplied to AC motor to allow normal operation of the AC motor, and a second state, activated via a second electrical signal, in which no electricity is supplied to the AC motor to prevent unintentional operation of the AC motor.

A laundry appliance includes a blower that selectively delivers process air through an airflow path. A rotating drum defines a portion of the airflow path. The rotating drum is attached to a drive shaft that rotates the rotating drum about a rotational axis. The blower and the drive shaft are operated by a common motor. A heater selectively delivers heat to the airflow path. The heater defines an energizing state when a motor current delivered to the common motor is within a predetermined motor current range that is indicative of the common motor operating. The heater defines an idle state when the motor current is outside of the predetermined motor current range.
CONTROLLER AND DRIVE CIRCUITS FOR ELECTRIC MOTORS
An electric motor system is described. The electric motor system includes a drive circuit configured to supply variable frequency current and a contactor configured to supply line frequency current, wherein the drive circuit includes a three-phase inverter and an H-bridge including two phases of the inverter. The electric motor system also includes an electric motor and a controller. The controller is configured to control the inverter to supply variable frequency current to the electric motor over a first duration and determine to control the drive circuit to transition from supplying variable frequency current to supplying line frequency current. The controller is also configured to determine a polarity of a sensed alternating current (AC) voltage, disable at least two switches of the H-bridge, and control the contactor to close, thereby preventing the contactor and the inverter from energizing the electric motor at the same time once the contactor is closed.
HYBRID DRIVE CIRCUIT FOR VARIABLE SPEED INDUCTION MOTOR SYSTEM AND METHODS OF CONTROL
Controllers for controlling hybrid motor drive circuits configured to drive a motor are provided herein. A controller is configured to drive the motor using an inverter when a motor commanded frequency is not within a predetermined range of line input power frequencies, and couple line input power to an output of the inverter using a first switch device when the motor commanded frequency is within the predetermined range of line input power frequencies.
HYBRID DRIVE CIRCUIT FOR VARIABLE SPEED INDUCTION MOTOR SYSTEM AND METHODS OF CONTROL
Controllers for controlling hybrid motor drive circuits configured to drive a motor are provided herein. A controller is configured to drive the motor using an inverter when a motor commanded frequency is not within a predetermined range of line input power frequencies, and couple line input power to an output of the inverter using a first switch device when the motor commanded frequency is within the predetermined range of line input power frequencies.
HARD START KIT FOR MULTIPLE REPLACEMENT APPLICATIONS
A hard start capacitor replacement unit has a plurality of capacitors in a container sized to fit in existing hard start capacitor space. The capacitors are 4 metallized film capacitors wound in a single cylindrical capacitive element. The container has a common terminal and capacitors value terminals for the plurality of capacitors, which may be connected singly or in combination to provide a selected capacitance. An electronic or other relay connects the selected capacitance in parallel with a motor run capacitor. The hard start capacitor replacement unit is thereby adapted to replace a wide variety of hard start capacitors.
