According to an embodiment of the present disclosure, an apparatus includes a transformer having a set of input terminals, a first set of output terminals, and a second set of output terminals. First and second rectifiers are coupled to the first and second sets of output terminals, respectively. The transformer is configured to transform three phase alternating current (AC) provided to the set of input terminals into first and second three phase AC outputs at the first and second sets of output terminals, respectively. The first three phase AC output is phase shifted from the second three phase AC output.

The electric motor includes a plurality of stator windings, a plurality of switches for selectively coupling the plurality of stator windings in a first configuration or a second configuration, and a controller connected to the plurality of switches. The controller is configured to control the plurality of switches to configure the plurality of stator windings in the first configuration, monitor a condition of the power tool, and control the plurality of switches to configure the plurality of stator windings in the second configuration based on the condition of the power tool.

A lawn and garden power tool can include a battery, an electric motor, a shaft driven by the motor, an implement drive by the shaft, and a controller. The motor can include a rotor and two stator cores. A first coil can be wound on the first stator core and a second coil can be wound on the second stator core. The controller can be configured to selectively cause the motor to operate in a first output mode in which the battery pack is electrically connected to the first coil and the second coil based on a first predetermined condition, and the first coil is electrically connected in series with the second coil; and selectively cause the motor to operate in a second output mode in which the battery pack is electrically disconnected from the second coil and electrically connected to the first coil based on a second predetermined condition.
