An object is to provide a monitoring signal light output apparatus capable of transmitting a monitoring signal light with a simple configuration. An optical demultiplexer (11) is inserted into an optical fiber (F1) and demultiplexes a monitoring signal light (M1) transmitted through the optical fiber (F1). A SOA (13) amplifies and modulates the monitoring signal light (M1) separated by the optical demultiplexer (11). A control unit (15) outputs a signal (S1) indicating a state of a submarine apparatus. A SOA drive unit (14) outputs a drive signal (S2) to the SOA (13) in response to the signal (S1) to perform a modulation operation of the monitoring signal light (M1). An optical multiplexer (17) multiplexes the monitoring signal light (M1) amplified and modulated by the SOA (13) into the signal light transmitted by the optical fiber (F1). The monitoring signal light output apparatus is mounted on the submarine apparatus.

Frequency division multiple access optical subcarriers

A network or system in which a hub or primary node may communicate with a plurality of leaf or secondary nodes. The hub node may operate or have a capacity greater than that of the leaf nodes. Accordingly, relatively inexpensive leaf nodes may be deployed to receive data carrying optical signals from, and supply data carrying optical signals to, the hub node. One or more connections may couple each leaf node to the hub node, whereby each connection may include one or more spans or segments of optical fibers, optical amplifiers, optical splitters/combiners, and optical add/drop multiplexer, for example. Optical subcarriers may be transmitted over such connections, each carrying a data stream. The subcarriers may be generated by a combination of a laser and a modulator, such that multiple lasers and modulators are not required, and costs may be reduced. As the bandwidth or capacity requirements of the leaf nodes change, the number of subcarriers, and thus the amount of data provided to each node, may be changed accordingly. Each subcarrier within a dedicated group of subcarriers may carry OAM or control channel information to a corresponding leaf node, and such information may be used by the leaf node to configure the leaf node to have a desired bandwidth or capacity.

An extinction ratio testing system (10) includes a microcontroller (102), an extinction ratio tester (104), and a thermostat (106). The microcontroller (102) controls the thermostat (106) to maintain an optical transceiver module (20) at a predetermined high temperature, and then the microcontroller (102) controls the extinction ratio tester (104) to test an extinction ratio of the optical transceiver module (20). If the extinction ratio is lower than a standard extinction ratio, the microcontroller (102) controls the optical transceiver module (20) to increase a laser operating current (212) of the optical transceiver module (20) to increase the extinction ratio.

Test device for verifying operation of an optical fiber monitoring system by injection of longitudinal strain

In an optical fiber monitoring system which detects physical disturbance or other parameters such as temperature or strain of a fiber where a monitor signal is transmitted along the optical fiber and analyzed to detect changes which are indicative of an event, a method is provided for periodically checking proper operation of the optical fiber monitoring system. :A fiber disturbance actuator periodically causes a pattern of disturbances of a portion of the fiber at a predetermined location thereon where the disturbance is characteristic of the event to be monitored. The monitor signal is analyzed to detect the pattern of changes and in the event that expected changes are not detected, a warning is issued that the intrusion detection system is not properly operating.
