Adaptive optics based simultaneous turbulence compensation of multiple orbital angular momentum beams
An adaptive optics compensation approach for an OAM multiplexed FSO communication system is described, in which a Gaussian beam is used to probe the turbulence-induced wavefront distortions and derive the correction pattern for compensating the OAM beams. Using this approach, we demonstrate simultaneous compensation of multiple OAM beams each carrying a 100-Gbit/s data channel through emulated atmospheric turbulence. The results indicate that the turbulence-induced crosstalk and power penalty could be efficiently mitigated by ˜12.5 dB and ˜11 dB respectively.
TRANSCEIVER MODULE INCLUDING OPTICAL SENSOR AT A ROTATIONALLY SYMMETRIC POSITION
An optoelectronic module includes a transceiver operable to transmit data optically. The transceiver includes a light emitter to emit light from the module, and a light detector to detect light entering the module. The light detector is disposed at a rotationally symmetric position with respect to a central axis of the module. Such modules can help facilitate the exchange of data optically between two devices.
Integrated optical transceiver with electronically controlled optical beamsteering
A beam-steering optical transceiver is provided. The transceiver includes one or more modules, each comprising an antenna chip and a control chip bonded to the antenna chip. Each antenna chip has a feeder waveguide, a plurality of row waveguides that tap off from the feeder waveguide, and a plurality of metallic nanoantenna elements arranged in a two-dimensional array of rows and columns such that each row overlies one of the row waveguides. Each antenna chip also includes a plurality of independently addressable thermo-optical phase shifters, each configured to produce a thermo-optical phase shift in a respective row. Each antenna chip also has, for each row, a row-wise heating circuit configured to produce a respective thermo-optic phase shift at each nanoantenna element along its row. The control chip includes controllable current sources for the independently addressable thermo-optical phase shifters and the row-wise heating circuits.
Reacquiring communication link based on historical data
The disclosure provides for a method for reacquiring a communication link between a first communication device and a second communication device. The method includes using one or more processors of the first communication device to receive historical data related to the first communication device and an environment surrounding the first communication device. The one or more processors are then used to determine one or more trends in the historical data related to fading of the communication link. Based on the one or more trends, the one or more processors are used to determine a starting time and an initial search direction for a search for the communication link. The one or more processors then execute the search at the starting time from the initial search direction.
Free space optical communications terminal
A free space optical communications transmitter terminal including an optical source arranged to provide a first beam of light encoding information to be communicated; an optical source arranged to provide photons encoding bits of a key of a Quantum Key Distribution protocol; and an optics arrangement. The first beam and the photons are linearly polarised. The optics arrangement is configured to combine the first beam and the photons into a single, second, beam to be transmitted to a receiver terminal; and transform the linear polarisation of the first beam into one of left and right circular polarisation and transform the linear polarisation of the photons into the other of left and right circular polarisation. A receiver terminal receives the second beam, transforms the circular polarisations into orthogonal linear polarisations, and filters out the linear polarisation of the first beam to allow the photons to pass to a single photon detector.
Adaptive rate modem
The disclosure provides a communication system that includes sensors, a plurality of components, and processors. The sensors receive measurements related to a state of the communication system. The processors receive an indication of an amount of received power at a remote communication system and estimate a state of the plurality of components based on the received one or more measurements and the received indication. Using the indication and the estimated state, the processors determine whether the amount of received power is likely to fall below a minimum received power within a given time interval. When it is likely, the processors select an adjustment technique of a plurality of adjustment techniques for adjusting a data rate of the outbound signal and adjust a given component of the communication system using the selected adjustment technique to change the data rate of the outbound signal.
Space optical communications using laser beams
A system for communicating between an object in space and a ground station, between objects in space, or between ground stations, includes a telecentric lens. Photodetectors positioned upon a focal plane of the telecentric lens detect an inbound light beam, received from a source, that has passed through the telecentric lens to the focal plane. Lasers positioned upon the focal plane transmit light beams from the focal plane through the telecentric lens to an area that includes the source of the inbound light beam. A processor detect signals from individual photodetectors corresponding to light detected, and selectively signals individual lasers that are close to those photodetectors, resulting in a returning beam that arrives close to the source, and which carries encoded data.
Methods, devices, and systems for integration, beam forming and steering of ultra-wideband, wireless optical communication devices and systems
Disclosed herein are methods, devices, and system for beam forming and beam steering within ultra-wideband, wireless optical communication devices and systems. According to one embodiment, a free space optical (FSO) communication apparatus is disclosed. The FSO communication apparatus includes an array of optical sources wherein each optical source of the array of optical sources is individually controllable and each optical source configured to have a transient response time of less than 500 picoseconds (ps).
Swivelling Mechanism For Communication Units
An optical communication unit for sending and receiving optical communication signals is described. The optical communication unit includes an optical unit, an elevation drive and an azimuth drive. The optical unit emits and/or receives optical communication signals. The elevation drive is coupled with the optical unit by way of an elevation bearing and swivels the optical unit about an elevation axis. The azimuth drive is coupled with the optical unit and the elevation drive and turns the optical unit together with the elevation drive about an azimuth axis. The elevation axis is arranged eccentrically with respect to the azimuth axis, so that the elevation axis is offset with respect to the azimuth axis by a lateral offset. This allows the optical unit to be swiveled to alongside the azimuth drive, so that a swiveling range of the optical unit is increased.
Temporospatial software-defined networking for NGSO satellite networks
The disclosure provides for a system that includes a network controller. The network controller is configured to receive information from nodes of a network, where nodes include one node that is in motion relative to another node. The network controller is also configured to generate a table representing nodes, available storage at each node, and possible links in the network over a period of time based on the information, and determine a series of topologies of the network based on the table. Based on received client data including a data amount, the network controller is configured to determine flows for the topology. The network controller then is configured to generate a schedule of network configurations based on the flows, and send instructions to the nodes of the network for implementing the network configurations and transmitting client data.
