An optical circuit that monolithically integrates a splitter, two optical 90 hybrids, and first to fourth waveguides on a unique substrate is disclosed. The splitter splits a local beam into first and second local beams each provided to the hybrids through the third and fourth waveguides, while, the signal beam including first and second signal beams each provided to the hybrids through the first and second waveguides without intersecting with the third and fourth waveguides. The hybrids extract in-phase components and quadrature phase components of the first and second signal beams with respect to the first and second local beams, respectively. The phase statuses of the quadrature components against the in-phase components are same in the two hybrids.

Phase noise is corrected in a communication system including a modulated signal having a constellation including multiple constellation points. The system and methods include a coarse phase recovery followed by a fine phase recovery. Coarse phase corrected points can be generated using an M.sup.th power operation. Fine phase corrected points can be generated by rotating each coarse phase corrected point by an angle that is determined by the location of that coarse phase corrected point in the constellation, and applying a phase offset function to each transformed point. A phase noise mitigated constellation can be generated by derotating the fine phase corrected points.

COHERENT OPTICAL RECEIVER FOR MEDIUM- AND SHORT-REACH LINKS

A coherent optical receiver having an analog electrical circuit connected to combine the outputs of multiple photodetectors to generate an electrical output signal from which the data encoded in a received modulated optical signal can be recovered in a robust and straightforward manner. In an example embodiment, the analog electrical circuit includes one or more transimpedance amplifiers connected between the photodetectors and the receiver's output port. The coherent optical receiver may include a dual-polarization optical hybrid coupled to eight photodiodes to enable polarization-insensitive detection of the received modulated optical signal. The signal processing implemented in the analog electrical circuit advantageously enables the use of relatively inexpensive local-oscillator sources that may have relaxed specifications with respect to linewidth and wavelength stability. Different embodiments of the analog electrical circuit can be used to enable the receiver to receive amplitude- and intensity-encoded modulated optical signals.

In a method and system for decoding a differential M-ary phase or quadrature amplitude modulated signal, the incoming signal is decoded according to a plurality of different decoding rules, wherein said plurality of decoding rules correspond to different values of a resulting frequency difference or mismatch between a signal frequency and a local oscillator reference frequency. The invention allows to increase a tolerance window for the maximal allowable frequency offset, and thus helps to speed up an initial locking process or to allow for equipment which has a lower tuning granularity.
