System and method for grid based cyber security

A method and system for providing a secure communication network using an electrical distribution grid is disclosed. A device connected to the electrical distribution grid initiates a request for a secured key token by signaling an intelligent communicating device residing at or near an edge of the grid. The intelligent communicating device forwards the request to a receiver at a distribution substation on the electrical grid. This receiver enhances the properties of the request such that a grid location for the request can be inferred. The enhanced request is forwarded to a server at the distribution substation, which compares the request grid location to a Grid Map and Policies of known secure grid locations. Any inconsistencies between the grid location inferred from the enhanced request and the Grid Map and Policies locations are considered evidence of tampering, and the server rejects the request.

Powerline communication network system having device that performs a joining process

Disclosed embodiments include a system having one or more member devices coupled to a network and a power line communication (PLC) device. The PLC device is configured to identify available bootstrapping agents that correspond to the one or more member devices, each available bootstrapping agent having a corresponding personal area network (PAN) identifier, identify a target network having a PAN identifier to join, select a target bootstrapping agent from available bootstrapping agents associated with the target PAN identifier to use for a join process with the target network, attempt to join the target network using the target bootstrapping agent, and when the attempt to join is successful, transmit and receive PLC signals over at least one power line associated with the target network using a particular frequency band and a modulation scheme.

METHOD FOR SECURE CONFIGURATION AND USE OF A SYSTEM FOR MONITORING AND/OR CONTROLLING MODULES

A method and device for secure configuration and use of a system of modules for monitoring and/or controlling pieces of domestic, industrial or office equipment, the system including a communicating module, able to receive items of monitoring and control information from other modules of the system and to communicate the information items received to a central server via a first communication mode. The configuration method includes obtaining, with a portable piece of equipment associated with an installation operator, an identifier able to encode information items containing a physical network address of the communicating module, and obtaining an installation geolocation information item, and transmitting to the central server an information item containing the physical network address and the installation geolocation information item. A configuration authorisation is granted depending on a verification of prior memorisation of said physical network address in a memory of the central server.

Power line network apparatus, system and method

Various aspects of the instant disclosure are directed towards a method for communicating time-based data in a power line communication system. In accordance with one or more example embodiments, firmware is downloaded to a multitude of endpoints over power distribution lines carrying alternating current (AC) power. Endpoint devices targeted for changes to stored firmware are grouped and the firmware is delivered in chunks to each group. As devices receive a particular chunk of firmware, the device advances to a next stage and provides information indicative of this stage, based upon which subsequent chunks of firmware are communicated. This occurs (e.g., on a daily cycle) until the endpoint has received all firmware for an update, after which the endpoint(s) are re-started using the firmware. Accordingly, such updates can be carried out in a cyclic and verifiable manner.

Robust mode for power line communications

Embodiments include methods of powerline communications using a preamble with band extension is provided. A method may include receiving a packet data unit PDU. Bit-level repetition is applied to at least a portion of the PDU to create a repeated portion. Interleaving is performed per a subchannel. Pilot tones are inserted in the interleaved portion. Each data tone is modulated with respect to a nearest one of the inserted pilot tones. The PDU is transmitted over a power line.

Relative phase detection in power line communications networks

Systems and methods for relative phase detection and zero crossing detection for power line communications (PLC) are described. In some embodiments, both transmit and receive PLC devices detect a zero crossing on an AC mains phase. The devices start a phase detection counter (PDC) by generating a zero crossing pulse within 5% of the actual zero crossing time. When a frame is transmitted, the transmitting device includes a PDC value in the frame control header (FCH). The PDC value corresponds to the start time of the FCH. When the frame is received at the receive PLC device, the receive PLC device measures a local PDC value between the zero crossing and the start of the FCH. The receive device compares the local PDC value to the PDC value in the FCH of the received frame and determines if the devices are on the same phase.

Set-top-box having a built-in master node that provides an external interface for communication and control in a power-line-based residential communication system

A set-top-box (STB) provides capability for monitoring and control of power usage and the ability to establish communications. A smart residential service system (SRSS) is provided that uses power line communication (PLC) technology to provide secure in-home LAN communication and also to monitor and provide remote control of connected appliances in the home. An embodiment combines the STB with a master unit (MST) that is used with PLC to meet the requirements of the central device in the SRSS.

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR AUTHENTICATION AND IDENTITY MANAGEMENT OF COMMUNICATING DEVICES

Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, a network device that accesses internet protocol addresses associated with a group of end point devices where the network device is a closest network device to the group of end point devices, and transmitting data to another network device responsive to a determination that an internet protocol address associated with the data from an end point device is one of the internet protocol addresses associated with the group of end point devices. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Coexistence primitives in power line communication networks

Systems and methods for setting a carrier-sensing mechanism in a PLC node are disclosed. In a PLC standard, coexistence is achieved by having the nodes detect a common preamble and backing off by a Coexistence InterFrame Space (cEIFS) time period to help the node to avoid interfering with the other technologies. In one embodiment, a PHY primitive is sent from the PHY to the MAC know that there has been a preamble detection. A two-level indication may be usedone indication after receiving the preamble and other indication after decoding the entire frame. The MAC sets the carrier-sensing mechanism based on the preamble detection.
