Home automation having user privacy protections

An acoustic sensor is positioned in an environment and configured to generate a data stream responsive to acoustic energy in the environment. A controller is configured to receive the data stream. The controller is further configured to analyze the data stream to determine ambient acoustic signals. The controller is further configured to generate an ambient acoustic template based on the determined ambient acoustic signals. The controller is further configured to apply the ambient acoustic template to the data stream so that the ambient acoustic signals are suppressed in the data stream. The controller is further configured to analyze the data stream after the ambient acoustic signals are suppressed in order to determine if the acoustic energy in the environment includes acoustic energy of human snoring. The controller is further configured to issue a control signal to a second controller in order to engage a home automation device.

An apparatus may control the power delivered from an AC power source to an electrical load, and may comprise a controllably conductive device. The apparatus may also comprise a controller that may be operatively coupled to a control input of the controllably conductive device. The apparatus may also include a first wireless communication circuit operable to communicate via a first protocol and to join a first wireless communication network operable to communicate via the first protocol. The first wireless communication circuit may be in communication with the controller. The controller may be operative to determine a first condition for communicating via the first protocol. The controller may also be operable to control the first wireless communication circuit to join the first wireless communication network upon the first condition being satisfied.

Systems and methods for homeowner-directed risk of property damage mitigation

Methods and systems for homeowner-directed risk mitigation for damage to a property associated with insurance-related events are provided. A smart home controller may analyze data received from a plurality of smart devices disposed on, or proximate to, a property as well as data received from an insurance provider. If it is determined that an actual or potential risk of property damage exists, the smart home controller may transmit an alert to a homeowner detailing the risk. The homeowner may respond to the alert by transmitting an instruction to mitigate or prevent damage associated with the risk back to the smart home controller. Subsequently, the smart home controller may transmit information about the actual or potential risks and any homeowner-directed mitigative actions to an insurance provider. The insurance provider may interpret the transmitted data and perform insurance activities, such as providing discounts and adjusting an insurance policy associated with the property.

Doorbell communities

Doorbells can send data to each other to enable a first doorbell user to warn a second doorbell user regarding a suspicious visitor. A first user can indicate a first trait of a visitor via a first remote computing device. The first user can create a user group to enable the members of the user group to use their doorbells to take pictures of suspicious visitors and to send the pictures of the suspicious visitors to other members of the user group.

Distributed heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system

A heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system includes a first control unit and a second control unit. The first control unit is communicatively coupled to a first plurality of HVAC units, a first interactive display, and a first plurality of wireless sensors using a Wi-Fi direct protocol. The second control unit is communicatively coupled to a second plurality of HVAC units, a second interactive display, and a second plurality of wireless sensors over a Wi-Fi network. The first control unit is operable to connect to the second control unit using the Wi-Fi direct protocol. Upon connecting to the second control unit, the first control unit switches communications with the first plurality of HVAC units, the first interactive display, and the first plurality of wireless sensors from the Wi-Fi direct protocol to the Wi-Fi network.

Doorbell communication systems and methods

The disclosure includes a doorbell having a visitor detection system that can comprise at least one of a camera, a microphone, and a motion detector. The method for using the doorbell can comprise recording, via the camera, video data that represents a video. The method can also comprise recording, via the microphone, audio data that represents audio. The method of using the doorbell can comprise transmitting at least a portion of the video data and at least a portion of the audio data, to a remote computing device that is communicatively coupled to the doorbell. The method can also comprise transmitting the video data and the audio data to a remote server that is communicatively coupled to the doorbell.

Relaying device status information using light indicator patterns

Methods, systems, and computer readable media can be operable to facilitate recognizing and providing notification of events, states, and/or conditions associated with the CPE (customer premise equipment) device and/or associated networks or devices. An application running on a mobile device (e.g., smart phone) can be used to observe and diagnose electronic equipment (e.g., CPE device). Equipment can have indicators (audio, visual, etc.) that a human would have difficulty interpreting correctly. A mobile device application can be programmed to observe audio and/or visual indicators, report status and possibly recommend course(s) of corrective action to the user. Since the information observed by the mobile device is unidirectional (from the equipment to the mobile device) there is no increased security risk.
