The operation panel unit includes a display portion, an NFC reading portion, and a USB port. The NFC reading portion and the USB port are disposed on different surfaces of the display portion.

The authenticating unit authenticates a user who is holding a portable device. The transmitting unit transmits an action instructing signal for issuing an instruction to perform an action to a portable device that is associated with the user at plural radio wave output intensities selectively, via a radio communication line. The detecting unit detects, for at least one of the plural radio wave output intensities, a change of a status of the portable device that is being held by the user. The determining unit determines, when the action instruction signal is transmitted at the at least one of the plural radio wave output intensities, by determining whether or not the change corresponds to the action instructed by the action instruction signal, whether or not the user is holding the portable device that is associated with the authenticated user.

An information processing apparatus includes an authenticating unit, a transmitting unit, a detecting unit, and a determining unit. The authenticating unit authenticates a user who is holding a portable device. The transmitting unit transmits an action instructing signal for issuing an instruction to perform an action to a portable device that is associated with the user, via a radio communication line. The detecting unit detects a change of a status of the portable device that is being held by the user. The determining unit determines, by determining whether or not the change corresponds to the instructed action, whether or not the user is holding the portable device.

An image forming apparatus includes a short-range wireless communication device to communicate with a portable terminal via short-range wireless communication, a first wireless communication device to communicate with the portable terminal via a direct wireless connection, a second wireless communication device to communicate via a network connected to the image forming apparatus, and a control device. The control device includes an authentication unit that determines whether o a device within short-range wireless communication range has been authenticated. The control device sets up a connection for data communication via the network when the portable terminal has been authenticated and set up the direct wireless connection for data communication when the portable terminal has not been authenticated.

A wearable apparatus is provided for capturing and processing images from an environment of a user. In one implementation, the wearable apparatus is used for causing a device paired to the wearable apparatus to execute a selected function. The wearable apparatus includes an image capture device, a transmitter and at least one processing device. The at least one processing device is programmed to obtain images captured by the image capture device; analyze the images to detect a contextual situation associated with images; based on the detected contextual situation, associate with the at least one image a category tag, wherein the category tag is associated with a selected function; determine image-related information associated with the detected contextual situation; and cause the transmitter to transmit the determined image-related information to the paired device to cause the paired device to execute the selected function based on the determined image-related information.

An image forming apparatus includes a short-range wireless communication device to communicate with a portable terminal via short-range wireless communication, a first wireless communication device to communicate with the portable terminal via a direct wireless connection, a second wireless communication device to communicate via a network connected to the image forming apparatus, and a control device. The control device includes an authentication unit that determines whether o a device within short-range wireless communication range has been authenticated. The control device sets up a connection for data communication via the network when the portable terminal has been authenticated and set up the direct wireless connection for data communication when the portable terminal has not been authenticated.

A wearable apparatus is provided for capturing and processing images from an environment of a user. In one implementation, a system for controlling one or more controllable devices includes a transceiver and at least one processing device. The processing device is programmed to obtain one or more images captured by an image sensor included in a wearable apparatus, analyze the one or more images to identify a controllable device in an environment of a user of the wearable apparatus, analyze the one or more images to detect a visual trigger associated with the controllable device and, based on the detection of the visual trigger, transmit, via the transceiver, a command. The command may be configured to change at least one aspect of the controllable device.
