IMAGE READING DEVICE
An image reading device includes first glass, an adjacent portion adjacent to the first glass, a reading unit, and a position reference portion. The first glass enables an document to be placed on a front surface side of the document. The reading unit is capable of being in contact with at least one of the adjacent portion and the first glass and reads, from a back surface side of the first glass, the document placed on the first glass by using a sensor while moving from the adjacent portion side in a movement direction. The position reference portion is disposed on the front surface side of the first glass and serves as a reference of a position of the reading unit in the movement direction. When the position reference portion is read by the reading unit, the reading unit is in contact with the adjacent portion and the first glass.

The image forming apparatus includes a sheet conveyance part, an image forming part, and a sheet reading unit. The sheet reading unit includes a line sensor. The line sensor includes split line sensors. The line sensor reads a conveyed sheet. The line sensor includes a plurality of split line sensors. The split line sensors are placed at non-stretching positions, respectively. Each non-stretching position is such a position that as in the main scanning direction, a main-scanning-direction distance from a gap between one split line sensor and another split line sensor to an ideal edge position of every usable regular size exceeds a permissible value.

A controller of an image reading apparatus is configured to cause the reading device to read an image on an original with moving a reading location from a first position to a second position, after reading the image on the original with moving the reading location from a third position to the first position, the third position being a position between the first position and the second position and spaced from the first position by a particular distance and determining a width of the original in the main scanning direction. The controller is configured to further move the reading location from the second position to the first position, and detect an instruction to continue reading a subsequent original during a period before the reading location reaches the third position. When the instruction is detected, the controller stops moving the reading location when it reaches the third position.
Multiple sheet media pick detection
Methods and apparatus pertaining to scanning or copying documents are provided. Sheet media are individually transported away from an input location. Optical scanning of the sheet media is initiated in accordance with detecting the passage of leading edges of the sheet media. Electronic signals resulting from the scanning are automatically analyzed to detect trailing edges of overlapping sheet media. A user notification is issued if a multiple sheet pick event is detected. A user can resume scanning or copying of a multiple sheet document at the location where the multiple sheet pick occurred.
