System and method for alignment of scan documents
A system and method for aligning documents for scanning includes a multifunction peripheral with a controller having a processor and associated memory. The controller issues instructions controlling operation of a scanner. A tangible document is placed on a surface of a scanner platen, and a sensor determines its location relative to the platen. An optimal position of the document relative to the platen is determined. The processor then generates a graphical rendering on an associated display indicative of a directed repositioning of the document on the platen in accordance with a determined optimal position of the document relative to the platen.

Aspects of the present disclosure provide methods and apparatuses for processing a digital image of a document, for example, to determine whether the document is a long document. An exemplary method generally includes obtaining a plurality of digital images of the document, segmenting at least a first digital image of the plurality of images into pixels associated with a foreground of the first digital image and pixels associated with a background of the first digital image, detecting a plurality of contours in the segmented first digital image, deciding, for each detected contour of the plurality of contours, whether that contour is an open contour or a closed contour, and determining that one or more sides of the document is out of bounds based, at least in part, on the decisions.

An image reading apparatus includes a reading unit configured to read an image of a document and generate image data, a filtering unit configured to perform filtering processing on the image data generated by the reading unit and generate image data, a binarization unit configured to perform binarization processing based on the image data generated by the filtering unit using a first threshold value to generate first binary image data, and perform binarization processing based on the image data generated by the filtering unit using a second threshold value to generate second binary image data, and a detection unit configured to detect an edge in the image data generated by the reading unit based on the first binary image data and the second binary image data generated by the binarization unit.

The acquisition unit is configured to acquire information relating to a length of the original to be read by the reading unit in a main scanning direction orthogonal to the conveying direction, and the setting unit is configured to set an ineffective region based on the information acquired by the acquisition unit, wherein the ineffective region is a region in the main scanning direction of the pixel data which is not to be used for determination of an inclination amount corresponding to an inclination angle, with respect to the main scanning direction, of a side at a leading edge of the original in the conveying direction.

An image processing device includes a communication interface and a processor. The communication interface acquires a read image generated by reading an original document. The processor determines in accordance with an original document image, which corresponds to the original document in the read image, which one of a first skew causing tilt in the original document image and a second skew causing distortion in the original document image occurs. The processor changes in accordance with a result of the determination, processing to be executed when the skew occurs in the original document image. The second skew may include distortion of the original document image and tilt of the original document image.

An inclination detecting device includes processing circuitry. The processing circuitry is configured to detect, in image information that is an image of an object imaged by an imaging device at an imaging position where a background member forms a background, a first boundary between the background member and a shadow of the object at detection positions in at least one of main-scanning and sub-scanning directions on an outline of the object; detect a second boundary between the object and the shadow of the object at detection positions in at least one of the main-scanning and sub-scanning directions on the outline of the object in the image information; detect a boundary group including detection results of the second boundary at the detection positions; and detect an inclination of the object in the image information from detection results of the first boundary, the second boundary, and the boundary group.
