An image reading apparatus and an image reading method is provided. The apparatus and method are capable of efficiently performing a check process for determining whether a document has been forgotten after image reading only in an appropriate case. Whether a process for detecting a forgotten document is necessary to be performed is determined prior to the process every time after a reading process for reading an image of a single page.

An example image forming apparatus includes a scanner including a feeding device, a multi-feed detection sensor to detect an event corresponding to a multi-feed of a paper fed from the feeding device, a return device to return a target paper detected as the event, a user interface device, a processor, and a memory to store instructions executable by the processor. The processor is to execute the instructions to control an operation of the return device based on the setting information of the multi-feed detection sensor input through the user interface device.

An image forming apparatus includes an image forming unit, a display, a reading unit configured to read a reference image formed on a test sheet by the image forming unit, wherein the reference image includes a mark corresponding to a reading order, a controller configured to control the image forming unit to form the reference image, cause the reading unit to execute a first reading operation, determine whether first read data is obtained, inform of a reading error if the first read data is not obtained in the first reading operation, cause the reading unit to execute a second reading operation, determine whether second read data is obtained, and inform of a reading error if the second read data is not obtained in the second reading operation, and an adjustment unit configured to adjust image forming positions based on the first read data and the second read data.

The image reading apparatus includes a reading unit configured to read the image of the original placed on the platen glass. The image reading apparatus determines whether the original is on the platen glass or not. If it is determined that the original is on the platen glass, the image reading apparatus determines whether the original is blank or not based on the image read by the reading unit. If it is determined that the original is not on the platen glass, or if it is determined that the original is blank, the image reading apparatus notifies the user that the original is not on the platen glass or the original is blank.

A sheet feeding apparatus includes a sheet conveying unit configured to convey a sheet along a conveyance path, a detecting unit configured to detect the sheet passing along the conveyance path, a control unit configured to determine an amount of delay of a sheet conveyed along the conveyance path based on the detection and determine information to be output based on the amount of the delay, and an output unit configured to output the information.

A printing apparatus according to the present invention instructs a conveyance unit to convey a first sheet and detects a size of the conveyed first sheet, the detected size being used for image processing for printing on a different sheet from the first sheet. The printing apparatus instructs, before detecting the size of the first sheet, the conveyance unit to convey a sheet next to the first sheet.

An image processing apparatus includes a recording device, a reading device, a first sheet supporter, a second sheet supporter, and a connection device. A display displays first notification information when a switch of the first sheet supporter, the second sheet supporter, or the connection device from the OFF state to the ON state is detected. The first notification information has object identification information identifying a first object for which the switch is detected, and a second object different from the first object among the first sheet supporter, the second sheet supporter, and the connection device. The display displays an acceptance image for accepting an instruction of execution of a processing to be executed using the first object and the second object, when a switch of a state of the second object from the OFF state to the ON state is detected, with the first notification information being displayed.

In accordance with one embodiment, a sheet feed apparatus comprises a sheet housing section, a guide, an optical sensor, markers and a determination section. The sheet housing section houses sheets. The guide is arranged at a position corresponding to the size of the sheet housed in the sheet housing section. The detection position of the optical sensor varies by interlocking with the guide. The markers, which have different image features corresponding to the sizes, are arranged at the detection position of the optical sensor pre-determined according to the size of the sheet. The determination section determines the size of the sheet housed in the sheet housing section based on a detection result of the optical sensor.

An image processing apparatus comprises a first detecting unit configured to detect an object, a power control unit configured to shift the image processing apparatus from a second power state to a first power state which consumes more power than the second power state when the first detecting unit detects an object, and a second detecting unit configured to detect a sheet ejected to a sheet ejecting unit. The power control unit does not shift the image processing apparatus to the first power state when the second detecting unit no longer detects the sheet before a lapse of a predetermined period of time after the first detecting unit detects an object. The power control unit shifts the image processing apparatus to the first power state when the second detecting unit detects the sheet before a lapse of the predetermined period of time after the first detecting unit detects an object.

An image reading apparatus capable of recognizing edge portions of an original image with precision is provided. The image reading apparatus uses an image reading unit to scan an original being conveyed and read an image of the original. The image reading apparatus includes an edge information obtaining unit and an edge determining unit. The edge information obtaining unit detects an image of an edge portion of the original image and obtains, for each point in a main scanning direction, edge information, which indicates whether or not an edge portion image is detected at the point in a sub-scanning direction. The edge determining unit conducts detection from at least one of two directions of the main scanning direction to detect a point where a given number of successive edge portion images are detected, and obtains an edge portion based on the detected point.
