Media insertion system

In a substitutional media system, one of a set of media items is selected at a program receiver for output within a predefined programming slot, based on profile data available at the receiver. Sets of the media items are scheduled to slots according to one or more constraints pertaining to that slot and/or to media items scheduled to other slots. The receiver may select a media item for output in a slot by resolving constraints with media items scheduled to other slots, or selected for output in other slots.

Methods and apparatus for controlling content distribution

Methods and apparatus for controlled distribution of program content are described where program content for certain regions may be selectively blocked. The described methods and apparatus allow content distribution to authorized regions while providing control to the content provider to effectively block program content delivery to regions not entitled to receive the program content.

Client-server electronic program guide

A client-server interactive television program guide system is provided. An interactive television program guide client is implemented on user television equipment. The interactive television program guide provides users with an opportunity to define expressions that are processed by the program guide server. The program guide server may provide program guide data, schedules reminders, schedules program recordings, and parentally locks programs based on the expressions. Users' viewing histories may be tracked. The program guide server may analyze the viewing histories and generates viewing recommendations, targets advertising, and collects program ratings information based on the viewing histories.

System and Method for Routing Media

In one aspect, a method for managing streaming of video content to a client device includes providing the video content to a content distribution network for storage in a plurality of geographically separated resources of the content distribution network, dynamically selecting an advertisement media clip based on statistical information associated with a user of the client device, and receiving, from the client device via a packet-based telecommunication network, signaling to have the stored video content streamed to the client device. In response to the received signaling, the method includes transmitting to the client device via the packet-based telecommunication network and in one or more files having a format compatible with a media player on the client device, (i) an identification of a first resource of the content distribution network available to facilitate streaming of the stored video content to the client device, the identification being dependent at least in part on a relationship between a geographic location of the client device and geographic locations of the resources of the content distribution network and (ii) an identification of an advertising server, the identification of the advertising server being dependent at least in part on a relationship between the geographic location of the client device and a geographic location of the advertising server, wherein the one or more files, when processed by the client device, cause the client device to communicate with the first resource of the content distribution network and the advertising server to cause the stored video to be streamed to the client device by first resource of the content distribution network and cause the selected advertisement media clip to be streamed from the advertising server to the client device.

Providing Advanced Playback And Control Functionality To Video Client

Systems and methods for providing playback features to a device are disclosed. A manifest may be generated, which may comprise data associated with a content asset. A state file may be generated, which may comprise data associated with the manifest. Using one or more of the manifest and the state file, a device may modify segments of the content asset or may playback segments of the content asset.

Method and system for targeted advertisement filtering and storage

An advertisement system and method of identifying targeted advertisements for presentation to one or more viewers. In one aspect, the invention may be a method of identifying targeted advertisements for presentation to one or more viewers, the method comprising: receiving a map based on one or more advertising groups and characterization information derived from at least one of the viewers; and transmitting to equipment associated with the viewers, one or more advertisements each having one or more advertising group identifier, wherein an advertising group identifier matches an advertising group within the map.

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR BOUNDARY-BASED NETWORK OPERATION
20180288369 · 2018-10-04 ·

Methods and apparatus for enforcing physical or logical boundaries, and targeting specific subscribers or groups of subscribers with particular content, within a network. In an exemplary embodiment, the network comprises a cable network operating according to a broadcast switched architecture (BSA), with a BSA server and a plurality of subscriber premises devices. Individual ones of these devices are identified to the server (such as via a unique identifier), and this information is correlated with one or more other parameters in order to selectively identify physical or logical groups of subscribers within the broader subscriber base. These other parameters may comprise, e.g., the postal zip code or telephone area code/exchange where the premises device is located, or alternatively relate to anecdotal or statistical viewing habits of the subscriber(s). Anonymity of the subscriber's identity, and autonomy from other data bases or sources of subscriber information, is maintained using this approach as well.

Method and apparatus for sending stored advertising data from an internet protocol television end user network interface device

A method and system are disclosed for continuously providing preexisting default advertisement data to an end user device from a non-transitory computer readable memory in an end user network interface device, prior to the end user device connecting to an online destination.

SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR CREATING VARIABLE LENGTH CLIPS FROM A MEDIA STREAM

Systems and methods are described for providing variable-length media clips based upon a received media stream. An exemplary system for providing media clips to users includes a database comprising a list of rules associated with a plurality of programs, as well as a first server and a second server. The first server receives information about a particular program being viewed by a media player and obtains rules from the database for the identified program that are transmitted to the media player. The second server receives a media clip of the particular program being viewed from the media player, wherein the media clip is created at the media player in accordance with the rules corresponding to the program, and subsequently makes the media clip available to the users.

SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR INTERACTIVE PROGRAM GUIDES WITH PERSONAL VIDEO RECORDING FEATURES

Methods and systems that provide enhanced personal video recorder (PVR) and interactive television program guide (IPG) functionality are provided. An interactive television application (application) may be implemented to provide such functionality. The application may be used to display a list of PVR recordings, to schedule recordings to a PVR, to configure recordings, to view a list of scheduled recordings, to configure recording settings, or to select delete priority settings for recordings. The application may integrate pay-per-view and PVR functionality. The application may send user notifications for changes that are to be made to the recording content of a PVR. Live programming may be buffered by the application using a straight buffers that are created for each new program. Parallel buffers for concurrent programs may be implemented using multiple tuners. Straight buffers may be used in managing or controlling the flow of programming. Television content may be automatically paused when a user is engaged in using the application. Multiple IPGs for different users of a PVR may be implemented. Other PVR related features are also provided.
