Variable resolution eye mounted displays
11284993 · 2022-03-29 · ·

A display device (e.g., in a contact lens) is mounted on the eye. The eye mounted display contains multiple sub-displays, each of which projects light to different retinal positions within a portion of the retina corresponding to the sub-display. Additionally, a “locally uniform resolution” mapping may be used to model the variable resolution of the eye. Accordingly, various aspects of the display device may be based on the locally uniform resolution mapping. For example, the light emitted from the sub-displays may be based on the locally uniform resolution mapping.

An emissive Solid State Imager (SSI) comprised of a spatial array of digitally addressable multicolor micro pixels. Each pixel is a micro optical cavity comprising multiple photonic layers of blue-violet semiconductor light emitting diode. One of the photonic layers is used to generate light at the blue primary of the SSI. Two of the photonic layers are used to generate violet-blue excitation light which is converted with associated nanophosphors layer into the green and the red primaries of the SSI. The light generated is emitted perpendicular to the plane of the imager device via a plurality of vertical optical waveguides that extract and collimate the light generated. Each pixel diode is individually addressable to enable the pixel to simultaneously emit any combination of the colors associated with its multicolor nanophosphors converted semiconductor light emitting diode at any required on/off duty cycle for each color.

A near eye display device includes a sparse array of intensity modulated light beam emission and steering points disposed on a transparent lens, capable of forming a wide field of view composite image directly on the retina with variable degrees of apparent depth controlled by an image forming timing signal. The active regions of the beam emission and steering elements is configured so as not to generate optical aberrations of transmitted ambient light that is apparent to the eye. The display may be applied to small form factor stereoscopic head worn display systems and used in conjunction with Augmented Reality software applications.

A projection device for displaying construction plans comprises a projector head having projection optics, a laser module, a first minor galvanometer redirecting incident light from the laser module toward a second minor galvanometer that redirects further the incident light toward the projection optics. A memory device stores one or more construction plans. A controller operatively connected to the laser module, the two minor galvanometers, and the memory device chooses a construction plan to be displayed from the memory device, selectively activates the laser module, and selectively causes the first and second mirror galvanometers to follow a path defined by the chosen construction plan concurrently with the selective activation of the laser module so that the incident light redirected toward the projection optics selectively forms a projection of the construction plan on a construction site.

Free space multiple laser diode modules

Systems, devices, and methods for optical engines and laser projectors that are well-suited for use in wearable heads-up displays (WHUDs) are described. Generally, the optical engines of the present disclosure integrate a plurality of laser diodes (e.g., 3 laser diodes, 4 laser diodes) within a single, hermetically sealed, encapsulated package. Such optical engines may have various advantages over existing designs including, for example, smaller volumes, better manufacturability, faster modulation speed, etc. WHUDs that employ such optical engines and laser projectors are also described.

Multiplexer

A multiplexer is provided with a plurality of waveguides, multiplexing units that are provided at an intermediate location within the waveguides, and laser light sources, wherein: the first multiplexing unit is arranged at a position that is closest to the laser light sources; and the laser light sources that have an optical axis at a position that is separated from the transmission axis of the visible light that is introduced into the first multiplexing unit are arranged so that the optical axis is inclined with respect to the transmission axis and the outer periphery of laser light that expands at a predetermined expansion angle passes in front of the first multiplexing unit.

Photo-sensing reflectors for compact display module assembly comprising a reflective coating on a light receiving surface of a reflective photodiode

Techniques are provided to reduce the form factor of laser-based systems by multi-purposing a photodiode used to help control the output of a laser. A reflective photodiode comprises a light receiving surface and a reflective coating. The light receiving surface is configured to absorb some incident light and to convert it into electrical current. The reflective coating is disposed on the light receiving surface and is configured to reflect some of the incident light away from the light receiving surface.
