A method for image fusion includes the following. One or more geometric characteristics of the NIR image and the RGB image are normalized. The normalized NIR image and the normalized RGB image are converted to a first NIR image and a first RGB image in a radiance domain, respectively. The first NIR image is decomposed to an NIR base portion and an NIR detail portion, and the first RGB image is decomposed to an RGB base portion and an RGB detail portion. The NIR base portion, RGB base portion, NIR detail portion and RGB detail portion are combined using a set of weights. A resulting weighted combination of these base and detail portions is converted from the radiance domain to a fused image in an image domain.

The computer-implemented method comprises obtaining input video data including frames of input image data comprising first image data values expressed in an input color space. The first image data values are processed with a first and second color space conversion process to generate first processed image data and second processed image data respectively. The first processed image data and the second processed image data include image data values expressed in an output color space. Output image data is derived from both the first processed image data and the second processed image data.

The method further includes aligning at least a portion of the first image and at least a portion of the second image to produce aligned images. The method additionally includes fusing the aligned images based on a diffusion kernel to produce a fused image. The diffusion kernel indicates a threshold level over a gray level range. The method also includes outputting the fused image. The method may be performed for each of a plurality of frames of a video feed.

Systems and methods for fusing images
