Predictive client mobility session management

Systems and methods are disclosed that enable predictive device mobility session management in a wireless network. A wireless communications network is able to maintain IP session continuity as a wireless device roams among wireless access points of the communications network by ensuring that the wireless device maintains communications with its home wireless access gateway.

Predictive and nomadic roaming of wireless clients across different network subnets

Wireless access points detect neighboring wireless access points in different subnets. Upon connecting with a wireless client, a wireless access point determines predictive roaming information for the wireless client. Predictive roaming information identifies the wireless client; its home network subnet; and includes connection information associated with the wireless client. The wireless access point forwards the predictive roaming information associated with a wireless client to neighboring wireless access points while the wireless client is still connected with the wireless access point. Neighboring wireless access points store received predictive roaming information. Upon connecting with a wireless client, a neighboring wireless access point determines if the wireless client matches the stored predictive roaming information. If so, the neighboring wireless access point uses the predictive roaming information to quickly connect with the wireless client and to establish a tunnel to redirect network traffic associated with the wireless client through to its home subnet.

A network node controls communication of user equipment in a mobile network with cellular network access and wireless local area network access. The network node receives from a further network node, information concerning a wireless local area network access to which the user equipment is attached and information concerning a cellular network access to which the user equipment is attached. On the basis of the received information, the network node controls whether to provide at least one service via the wireless local area network access or via the cellular network access.

Address assignment for initial authentication

A mobile device may transition between Extended Service Set (ESS) networks while maintaining the same internet protocol (IP) address while transitioning. The transition may occur seamlessly, such that a consumer never loses the network connection despite transitioning between networks. The mobile device may receive an IP address from a pool of addresses, such that the mobile device can keep that IP address as it is transitions between networks that each have access to the pool. The assignment of the IP address to the mobile device is from the pool of IP addresses rather than from the AP.

Multicast handover for mobile communications

Embodiments provide efficient multicast handover for content delivery to client devices in multi-carrier communications systems. For example, client devices in a transport craft can consume a media channel offering via a first carrier during transport through the communications system. Embodiments can establish respective multicast groups for the media channel offering in at least the first carrier and a subsequent second carrier, and can notify the craft of the multicast groups prior to the craft being serviced by the second carrier. Such pre-notification can permit multicast handover of the media channel offering from the first carrier to the second carrier in a manner that avoids typical handover-related. For example, embodiments can direct multicast delivery of the media channel offering to the craft in accordance with the first multicast group while being serviced by the first carrier and in accordance with the second multicast group while being serviced by the second.

Embodiments of the present invention relate to the field of communications technologies, and provide an IP address management method and apparatus, an IP address anchor, and a mobile node. The method includes: when detecting that a mobile node (MN) accesses an IP subnet on which an IP address anchor is located, obtaining, by the IP address anchor, a valid IP address prefix being used by the MN; and sending, by the IP address anchor, switchover indication information to the MN according to the valid IP address prefix, so that the MN determines, according to the switchover indication information, whether the accessed IP subnet has changed. The present invention resolves a prior-art problem that an MN cannot determine whether an IP subnet accessed by the MN has changed, thereby achieving a technical effect that an MN can accurately determine whether an IP subnet accessed by the MN has changed.
