Parts made by additive manufacturing are often structural in nature, rather than having functional properties conveyed by a polymer or other component present therein. Printed parts having piezoelectric properties may be formed using compositions comprising a plurality of piezoelectric particles dispersed in at least a portion of a polymer matrix comprising first polymer material and a sacrificial material, the sacrificial material being removable from the polymer matrix to define a plurality of pores in the polymer matrix. The piezoelectric particles may remain substantially non-agglomerated when combined with the polymer matrix. The sacrificial material may comprise a second polymer material. The compositions may define a composite having a form factor such as a composite filament, a composite pellet, a composite powder, or a composite paste. Additive manufacturing processes may comprise forming a printed part by depositing the compositions layer-by-layer and introducing porosity therein.

At least two materials with different physical and chemical properties are predetermined depending on a functionality of the sensor element or the active component of the sensor element. An outer shape, into which the at least two materials should be formed, is predetermined. The outer shape is divided into a plurality of virtual spatial regions, wherein in each virtual spatial region the material distribution of the at least two materials occurs homogeneously and periodically according to predetermined rules corresponding to a microstructure. The predetermined rules are ascertained via a computer supported method depending on the predetermined functionality of the sensor element or the active component of the sensor element, wherein digital data, which describe the ascertained distribution of the at least two materials, are transferred to at least one 3D printer. As a printed product the sensor element or the active component of the sensor element is created by the 3D printer based on the digital data.

A shear vibration-based piezoelectric composite material and a preparation method thereof are disclosed. The piezoelectric composite material includes a piezoelectric material and the passive material. The piezoelectric material includes a piezoelectric material polarized along the x-axis positive and a piezoelectric material negatively polarized along the x-axis. The piezoelectric materials in the two polarization directions are alternately arranged along the x-axis direction. The passive material includes a filling layer, a transition layer, and a planar layer. The filling layer is disposed between every two adjacent piezoelectric materials. The planar layer is located outer two surfaces perpendicular to the z-axis of the piezoelectric material. The planar layer on one side is fixedly connected to the filling layer in the odd-numbered position via the transition layer. The planar layer on the other side is fixedly connected to the filling layer in the even-numbered position via the transition layer. The piezoelectric composite material can be used to prepare an underwater acoustic transducer, a hydrophone, piezoelectric energy harvesters, and the like. The invention innovatively converts shear vibrations into the thickness vibrations of the upper and lower surfaces of the composite material, thereby improving the performance of the composite material.

Printed parts having piezoelectric properties may be formed using a composite filament comprising a plurality of piezoelectric particles dispersed in a thermoplastic polymer. The composite filaments may be formed through melt blending and extrusion. The composite filament is compatible with fused filament fabrication and has a length and diameter compatible with fused filament fabrication, and the piezoelectric particles are substantially non-agglomerated and dispersed along the length of the composite filament. The piezoelectric particles may remain substantially non-agglomerated when dispersed in the thermoplastic polymer through melt blending. Additive manufacturing processes may comprise heating such a composite filament at or above a melting point or softening temperature thereof to form a softened composite material, and depositing the softened composite material layer by layer to form a printed part.

A method of making a solvent cast polymer composite film comprising (a) contacting barium titanate, a titanate coupling agent (TCA) and a mixing solvent to form a barium titanate and TCA solution; (b) dispersing at least a portion of the barium titanate and TCA solution to form TCA treated barium titanate; (c) contacting at least a portion of the TCA treated barium titanate with a polyetherimide and a casting solvent to form a polymer composite casting solution; (d) casting at least a portion of the polymer composite casting solution onto a casting substrate to form a solvent cast polymer composite solution; and (e) curing at least a portion of the solvent cast polymer composite solution to form the solvent cast polymer composite film.
