Electrochemical membrane
This disclosure relates to electrolyzer composite membranes, and in particular, to a composite membrane having at least two reinforcing layers comprising a microporous polymer structure and a surprisingly high resistance to piercing. The electrolyzer composite membranes have a recombination catalyst configured to be disposed closer to an anode than to a cathode in a membrane-electrode assembly (MEA). The disclosure also relates to membrane-electrode assemblies and electrolyzers comprising the membranes, and to method of manufacture of the membranes.
METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING MEMBRANE ELECTRODE ASSEMBLY
In a first stacked body providing step, a first stacked body, in which a first ionomer material having an ion exchange capacity of less than a predetermined value and a first electrode are stacked, is provided. In a second stacked body providing step, a second stacked body, in which a second ionomer material having an ion exchange capacity of equal to or greater than the predetermined value and a second electrode are stacked, is provided. In a substrate providing step, an electrolyte substrate is provided. In a swelling step, the first stacked body, the second stacked body, and the electrolyte substrate are caused to swell. In a joining step, the electrolyte substrate and the first ionomer material of the first stacked body are joined together, and the electrolyte substrate and the second ionomer material of the second stacked body are joined together.
STABILIZED CATALYST LAYERS VIA CONTROLLED CRACKING
Microcracked and crack-free catalyst layers such as for electrodes in electrochemical cells (e.g., fuel cells) and method of making the same are disclosed. The microcracks may improve durability by better tolerating stresses without inducing or propagating into macrocracks. The microcracks also improve efficiency by providing reactant (e.g., oxygen) passages to catalyst in the catalyst layer. The microcracks may be formed in a predetermined pattern to further localize additional reactant passages is conventionally starved or more starved locations.
