Miniature Secondary Electrochemical Cell With Current Collector Design To Improve Open Circuit Voltage

A miniature electrochemical cell of a secondary chemistry having a total volume that is less than 0.5 cc is described. Before the present invention, miniature secondary electrochemical cells have been known to experience undesirable open circuit voltage discharge during their initial 21-day aging period. It is believed that electrolyte permeating through the cathode active material and an intermediate carbonaceous coating contacting the titanium base plate of the casing is the source of the undesirable discharge. To ameliorate this, aluminum is contacted to the inner surface of the base plate inside the casing. While aluminum is resistant to the corrosion reaction that is believed to be the mechanism for degraded open circuit voltage in miniature secondary electrochemical cells containing lithium, it is not biocompatible. This means that titanium is still a preferred material for the casing parts including the base plate that might be exposed to body fluids, and the like.

A coin cell having a hermetic design withstands high performance applications including high temperature missions from a drop in replacement envelope. The coin cell can include a container having a bottom wall and a surrounding wall that form an interior volume, and the surrounding wall can include an inner, upper peripheral edge, at a top of the surrounding wall. The coin cell can include an anode assembly; a cathode assembly; and a header ring including a header ring outer surface and a header ring inner surface that defines an opening. The coin cell can include an insulator ring that includes an insulator ring outer surface that extends along and inside of the header ring inner surface, and an insulator ring inner surface that defines an opening within the insulator ring. A pin can be provided in the opening of the insulator ring. The coin cell can include an electrolyte.

GASKET AND FUEL CELL

A gasket is arranged between a fastening portion of an end plate arranged at an end in a cell stacking direction of a cell stack of a fuel cell and a case covering a periphery of the cell stack. The gasket is configured to seal a gap between the fastening portion and the gasket and a gap between the case and the gasket. The gasket includes a base plate and an elastic material layer. The base plate has a slope section that connects an inner peripheral section and an outer peripheral section to each other. The inner peripheral section and the outer peripheral section are located at different positions in a thickness direction of the base plate. The slope section is inclined with respect to the inner peripheral section and the outer peripheral section.

Secondary battery

A secondary battery includes a first electrode plate and a second electrode plate, a case accommodating the electrode plates, and a cap assembly to seal the case. The cap assembly has a short-circuit hole and a cap plate electrically connected to the first electrode plate. The battery also includes an inversion plate spaced from a short-circuit plate. The inversion plate is positioned in or over the short-circuit hole and bent toward the case. The short-circuit plate is electrically connected to the second electrode plate. When an internal pressure of the battery exceeds a value, the inversion plate moves to contact the short-circuit plate, which, in turn, breaks a fuse. A groove is included in the gap assembly adjacent the short-circuit plate. When the inversion plate moves under excessive pressure, an edge portion of the gap assembly deforms away from the short-circuit plate.

Battery enclosure

A battery enclosure and method for manufacturing the same from organosheet materials. The battery enclosure includes a top cover with crossbeams integrated therein by overmolding that secures to a bottom panel to enclose a space for containing components of a battery. The bottom panel includes overmolded structural ribs to provide strength and rigidity to the bottom panel. An outer cover removably secure the top cover to the bottom panel and includes a honeycomb structure to crush upon impact and protect the battery components. The method comprises forming each of the components of the battery enclosure from a mixture of organosheets, reinforcing members, and overmolded elements to reduce the weight and complexity of manufacturing for the battery enclosure.
