Software controlled antenna
An antenna array having radiating elements and delay lines provided over a sandwich of layers that includes variable dielectric-constant material. The value of the variable dielectric-constant material at various points over the antenna is controlled via software, hence changing the operational characteristics of the antenna using software. The sandwich of layers may be a standard flat panel display, wherein images depicted on the flat panel display are software controlled with a program designed to change the dielectric constant, thus providing scanning and tuning ability to the array. That is, different images are programmed according to specifically desired change in the dielectric property of different pixels under different patches or feed-lines of the array, thereby controlling the frequency and/or directivity of the array.
Tunable antenna systems
An electronic device has wireless communications circuitry including an adjustable antenna system coupled to a radio-frequency transceiver. The adjustable antenna system may include one or more adjustable electrical components that are controlled by storage and processing circuitry in the electronic device. The adjustable electrical components may include switches and components that can be adjusted between numerous different states. The adjustable electrical components may be coupled between antenna system components such as transmission line elements, matching network elements, antenna elements and antenna feeds. By adjusting the adjustable electrical components, the storage and processing circuitry can tune the adjustable antenna system to ensure that the adjustable antenna system covers communications bands of interest.

A mobile terminal including a terminal body having a display unit disposed on one surface thereof; a frame supporting the display unit; a metal member spaced apart from the frame and exposed to an outside of the mobile terminal; a plurality of connecting members connecting the metal member to the frame and grounding the metal member; and an antenna unit disposed adjacent to the frame and including a radiator radiating wireless signals in a first frequency band. Further, the metal member is divided into specific areas by the connecting members, and one area located adjacent to the radiator, generates a parasitic resonance at a second frequency band different from the first frequency band, and a frequency band of the antenna unit is shifted to a third frequency band including the first frequency band by the metal member and the radiator when a dielectric is placed adjacent to the metal member.

The antenna device includes a high-band antenna element and a low-band antenna element that are connected to a common feed point, an antenna-shortening inductor that is connected to between the low-band antenna element and the feed point, and a capacitor that is connected to the antenna-shortening inductor in parallel.
Antenna with proximity sensor function
The disclosure concerns an antenna with proximity sensor function. The antenna and proximity sensors can be implemented in a laptop computer, and proximity sensor loading states are surveyed and used to determine when and to what degree to alter the reactance at the junction of or along the parasitic element to optimize the frequency response and/or the impedance properties of the antenna system. An algorithm or look-up table is configured to relate proximity sensor loading states to reactance required to alter antenna characteristics.

Other embodiments are disclosed.
SYSTEM AND METHOD OF OPTICAL ANTENNA TUNING
A method includes determining an operating frequency of an antenna at a component of the antenna. The method includes determining, at the component of the antenna, a filter node of a plurality of filter nodes to activate to tune the antenna to the operating frequency. The method includes transmitting power to the filter node, wherein the power is transmitted via a first optical fiber. The method also includes sending a signal from the component to a light source. The activation of the light source sends an optical signal to the filter node. The filter node adjusts a characteristic of a radiating element coupled to the filter node using the power responsive to the optical signal. Adjustment of the characteristic facilitates tuning the antenna to the operating frequency.
ADAPTIVE SELF-TUNABLE ANTENNA SYSTEM AND METHOD
Adaptive self-tunable antenna systems and methods are provided including a closed-loop system for sensing near-field RF signals of transmitted RF signals and tuning an antenna or switching between multiple antennas, so that the strength of the transmitted RF signals is maximized. A sensing antenna detects the near-field RF signal, which is filtered and converted to an RF strength control signal that can be used to generate an antenna tuning control signal. An antenna tuner uses the antenna tuning control signal to keep the antenna in resonance by dynamically changing the electrical length of the antenna or switching between multiple antennas to maximize the strength of the radiated RF signal. Such antennas may be less prone to detuning due to interaction with human bodies or other objects. Dynamically matching the antennas to an RF power amplifier and low noise amplifier can improve stability, power efficiency, gain, noise figure, and receiver sensitivity.
