11646499 · 2023-05-09 · ·

Novel directional antennas are disclosed which utilize plas-monic surfaces (PS) that include or present an array of closely-spaced parasitic antennas, which may be referred to herein as “parasitic arrays” or fractal plasmonic arrays (FPAs). These plasmonic surfaces represent improved parasitic directional antennas relative to prior techniques and apparatus. Substrates can be used which are transparent and/or translucent.

Wideband dipole array with differential feeding

A tightly coupled dipole array is an egg-crate configuration defined by a plurality of electrically connected antenna unit cells. At least one of the unit cells utilizes a short or conductive element that shorts the common mode resonance. Shorting the common mode resonance in an intentional manner removes instances of the common mode resonance. To achieve the shorting of the common mode resonance, a conductive element is connected with one of the dipole arms and connected to the outer conductor of the feed or a ground plane. This creates a grounding loop that pushes the resonance out of the band of interest.

DIELECTRIC-CORE ANTENNAS SURROUNDED BY PATTERNED METALLIC METASURFACES TO REALIZE RADIO-TRANSPARENT ANTENNAS

A transparent dielectric-core antenna surrounded by patterned metallic metasurfaces. The patterned metallic metasurface acts as a conductive medium for surface current to flow and efficiently radiate fields driven by a power source. Furthermore, the patterned metallic metasurface can strongly reduce the electrical presence of the dielectric-core to realize a radio-transparent antenna to nearby systems at any desired frequency band while still maintaining good radiation and matching properties. Such an antenna concept may be applied to a variety of geometries.
