Further, a method for increasing the aggregate capacity of a satellite communications network, comprising identifying high traffic regions within a coverage area of a first satellite, determining which user spot beams of the first satellite are available to each of the identified regions, determining a normalized distance metric for each user spot beam identified, and plotting a second beam pattern of a second satellite to produce at least one user spot beam with a lower normalized distance metric.

DIGITAL DITHERING FOR REDUCTION OF QUANTIZATION ERRORS AND SIDE-LOBE LEVELS IN PHASED ARRAY ANTENNAS

Systems and methods disclosed herein provide techniques for reducing quantization errors and side lobe levels in phased array antennas. The states of a quantized phase shifter of a phased array antenna may be dithered to achieve a time-averaged value that reduces quantization errors. By rapidly switching between the different states of the quantized phase shifter, a time-average value close to a desired phase state may be achieved with a low resolution phase shifter.

DISTRIBUTION OF A VIRTUAL NETWORK OPERATOR SUBSCRIPTION IN A SATELLITE SPOT-BEAM NETWORK

A system and method for bandwidth management for a Host Network Operator (HNO) is disclosed. The method including: providing shared beams shared by two or more of a plurality of Virtual Network Operators (VNOs), wherein each VNO has a subscription including a global bandwidth limit applicable for a flow control epoch for each VNO and a terminal subscription for each terminal associated with the respective VNO; aggregating, in the current flow control epoch, a demand and the terminal subscriptions of active terminals per shared beam per VNO; distributing, for each shared beam per VNO, the aggregated demand and active terminal subscriptions into a distribution bandwidth per shared beam per VNO, wherein the distribution bandwidth is based on the respective global bandwidth limit of the respective VNO; and proportionally balancing, for each shared beam, an oversubscription of the distribution bandwidths per shared beam per VNO based on the proportionalities of the global bandwidth limit of each VNO subscribing to the shared beam, to provide a proportional distribution bandwidth per shared beam per VNO.

Method and system for automatically calculating cable attenuation between a satellite terminal and a radio across a frequency spectrum

A very small aperture terminal (VSAT) installation tool is provided having the ability to measure cable loss along an interfacility link (IFL) between an outdoor unit and an indoor unit of the VSAT. Radio frequency (RF) signals can be transmitted from the indoor unit to the outdoor unit, where the RF signals are intercepted along the IFL prior to reaching the outdoor unit, and the output power is determined. The determined output power is compared to an expected output power at the indoor unit. The delta between the determined output power and the expected output power can be used to adjust the power of the indoor unit such that the outdoor unit can operate without reaching its compression point. The determined output power can be extrapolated based upon measured of the output power performed over a range of frequencies at which the indoor unit operates.

Satellite system with switched communication channels among earth stations

An exemplary satellite in a communication system supports communications among earth stations and has a first receiver that receiving a first RF signal transmitted from a first earth station that is down converted to a first electrical IF signal. An up converter converts a second electrical IF signal, from a second earth station carrying information for the first earth station, to a second RF signal and transmits it to the first earth station. A switch switches remotely reconfigurable electrical IF communication circuits between pairs of ports. Signals carrying information to be communicated between the first and second earth stations are linked together by the switch.

Inroute burst header in a VSAT system

A satellite terminal and a machine-implemented method are provided for encoding a burst header of a burst for transmission on an inroute. One component of a group of satellite terminal components consisting of an ASIC, a FPGA, and a DSP, generates a burst header having five information bits encoded therein. The five information bits may be encoded using a Reed-Muller code, a (32, 5) block code or a convolutional code having a code rate of either 1/5 or 1/10. The five information bits may represent one or more of a modulation type for a payload of the burst, a code rate for encoding the payload, a code type, and a spreading factor for spreading the payload during transmission. A satellite gateway and a machine-implemented method are also provided for decoding a burst header of a burst received on an inroute as described above.

Satellite terminal wireless voltage control

A satellite communication system, a method and a system are provided. In one aspect of the invention, an outdoor unit power source is connected to a switch of a satellite modem of an indoor unit. When the satellite modem receives a first signal from a wireless device, a first switch control signal is sent to the switch to open a connection between the outdoor unit power source and an inter-facility link connected to an antenna of an outdoor unit, thereby preventing power from flowing through the inter-facility link. When the satellite modem receives a second signal from the wireless device, a second switch control signal is sent to the switch to close a connection between the outdoor unit power source and the inter-facility link, thereby causing the power to flow through the inter-facility link. Other wirelessly received signals may cause various control signals to be sent via the inter-facility link.
