20170280266 · 2017-09-28 ·

Methods, apparatus, systems and articles of manufacture to provide an update via a satellite connection are disclosed. An example method includes scanning a local area network to identify a device in communication with the local area network. A hardware address of the device is determined. The hardware address of the device is compared against a whitelist of hardware addresses included in an update schedule. In response to detecting that the hardware address of the device is included in the whitelist of hardware addresses, an update identified in the update schedule is received via a broadcast distribution system, is recorded, and is transmitted to the device.

UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLE (UAV) BEAM POINTING AND DATA RATE OPTIMIZATION FOR HIGH THROUGHPUT BROADBAND ACCESS
20170325221 · 2017-11-09 ·

Systems and methods configured to form and manage different types of beams toward target ground terminals to “optimally” communicate with the terminals. In one set of embodiments, the UAV generates a set of beams to cover cells on the ground, the beams are divided into groups, and the UAV communications system deterministically and sequentially turns a subset of the beams on/off to reduce cross-beam interference and increase system throughput. In another embodiment, in order to increase throughput, the UAV communications system determines the highest data rate on the downlink and uplink that are decodable at the receiver given the received signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) while maintaining a low packet error rate. Systems and methods are described to determine the UAV antenna pattern toward different terminals needed for SINR calculation and data rate determination.

High-power flexible-polarization in-orbit-calibration satellite payload

A system of architecture, apparatus and calibration method is invented for high-power flexible-polarization payload for satellite communications. The system comprises onboard phase-tracked apparatus, flexible polarization mechanism, and in-orbit calibration method. The power combining and polarization performance of the phase-tracked payload is monitored on ground by measuring the cross-polarization discrimination (XPD) and/or axial ratio (AR). The high performance over the life is achieved by optimization of the XPD or AR on ground and adjusting complex gain of the transponders. The high-power flexible-polarization in-orbit-calibration payload may be applied but not limited to UHF, L, S, C, X, Ku and Ka-band high power satellite systems.

The present invention relates to satellite systems and more particularly, to the provision of a satellite system and method for communications applications, with global coverage. An optimal method of providing global broadband connectivity has been discovered which uses two different LEO constellations with inter-satellite links among the satellites in each constellation, and inter-satellite links between the constellations. The first constellation is deployed in a polar LEO orbit with a preferred inclination of 99.5 degrees and a preferred altitude of 1000 km. The second constellation is deployed in an inclined LEO orbit with a preferred inclination of 37.4 degrees and a preferred altitude of 1250 km.

TRANSIT ROUTES WITH ORBITAL EDGE COMPUTING RESOURCE AVAILABILITY FOR MOBILE EDGE COMPUTING CONSUMPTION POINTS

Disclosed are techniques to determine navigation paths for mobile points of consumption of edge computing resources where the edge computing resources are at least partially hosted on satellite devices. Datasets corresponding to a set of edge computing satellites are received describing their positions, orbital paths, and edge computing resources. Further datasets are received corresponding to mobile points of consumption of edge computing resources. Using both datasets, predictions are determined corresponding to demand for edge computing resources of the edge computing satellites. When a new mobile point of consumption of edge computing resources queues up a transit route to a destination, that transit route and the accompanying requirement for edge computing resources is compared with the determined predictions of resource availability. Where sufficient edge computing resources are unavailable for a transit route, a new route is generated to transit through regions where sufficient edge computing resources are predicted to be available.

Within a satellite communications system, a base station communicates with standard compliant user equipment (UE) via a satellite having a field of view. The base station has a processor that instructs the satellite to generate a wide beam signal covering a plurality of cells in the field of view, and detects an access request from a user equipment within the plurality of cells over the wide beam signal. The base station, comprising a processing device such as an eNodeB, then generates one or more network broadcast/access signals that is uplink to a satellite and broadcasted via one or more nominal beams generated by the satellite, covering all the inactive cells, one of the plurality of cells having the access request.
