Systems, methods, and computer-readable media are provided for logging long-term data and analyzing the long-term data with short-term data to determine the health of fiber connections in an optical network. A method, according to one implementation, includes a step of obtaining data associated with performance of fiber connections of an optical network. The fiber connections include at least an inter-node fiber connecting two adjacent network nodes and an intra-node fiber connection connecting two photonic devices within each of the two adjacent network nodes. The method further includes the step of logging the data over time as historical data and then analyzing the health of the fiber connections based on the historical data and newly-obtained data. Also, the method includes displaying a report on an interactive user interface, whereby the report is configured to show the health of the fiber connections.

Unused ports of a multi-fiber connector that is used for coupling between two communication modules are used for OTDR measurement that is transparent to the data communication. Results of the OTDR measurement can be used to infer quality/performance of links used for the data communication. According to one aspect, coupling of a communication module with integrated OTDR capability to a respective multi-fiber connector is via individual optical fibers. According to another aspect, coupling of the communication module with integrated OTDR capability to the respective multi-fiber connector is according to a stacked configuration using an optical guide module arranged between the communication module and the respective multi-fiber connector.

The method improves efficiency and accuracy of site selections and has wide applicability.

The control module extracts a first fault signal from the first FEC frame; generates a second fault signal based at least in part on the first fault signal; and encodes the second fault signal within a second FEC frame with the data traffic into a second digital data stream on the digital layer. The coherent transmitter has circuitry to convert the second digital data stream into a second optical signal on the optical layer and to transmit the second optical signal to a downstream node.
