System and method for enabling communications via a power line conveying DC power from multiple DC power sources such as solar panels. Power and communications are provided using a single combined power and communications line. Data communication signals received over the power line are detected and compared against power line voltage for processing received data and generating data for transmission. Remote units are self-powered using power harvesting of the data communication signals.

A system for detecting a fault in a first wire of a power grid that affects a transmission or reception of electromagnetic waves that transport data and that propagate along a surface of the first wire, selecting a backup communication medium from one or more backup communication mediums according to one or more selection criteria, and redirecting the data to the backup communication medium to circumvent the fault. An example cable assembly includes: a first plurality of conductors in a Litz cable arrangement; an outer protective layer configured to protect the plurality of conductors from physical damage; and a second plurality of conductors that are electrically isolated from the first plurality of conductors and are protected by the outer protective layer from physical damage.

A power line Ethernet adaptor is suitable to be applied to an external module including a first connector. The power line Ethernet adaptor includes a housing, a cover and a circuit board. The housing has an accommodating space. The cover is movably connected to the housing to move between an on-position and an off-position. When placed at the off-position, the cover covers the accommodating space. The circuit board is disposed in the accommodating space and has a power line Ethernet module and a second connector. When at least a part of the external module is disposed in the accommodating space, the first connector and the second connector are electrically connected to each other to establish the signal connection between the external module and the power line Ethernet module, and the cover also covers the external module when placed at the off-position.
