A combined symbol constellation may be selected from a uniform symbol constellation that is supported by a de-mapper to provide additional power split options while reducing modifications to the de-mapper. In some examples, a signal may be constructed according to a combined symbol constellation selected from a larger uniform symbol constellation based on a desired power-ratio. The signal may include a base-layer, used to communicate a first set of data, and an enhancement-layer, used to communicate a second set of data, in accordance with the selected combined symbol constellation. The signal may be received and de-mapped according to the combined symbol constellation at a de-mapper that supports a uniform symbol constellation that is larger than the combined symbol constellation.

An FEC coder in a transmission device according to an exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure performs BCH coding and LDPC coding based on whether a code length of the LDPC coding is a 16k mode or a 64k mode. A mapper performs mapping in an I-Q coordinate to perform conversion into an FEC block, and outputs pieces of mapping data (cells). The mapper defines different non-uniform mapping patterns with respect to different code lengths even an identical coding rate is used by the FEC coder. This configuration improves a shaping gain for different error correction code lengths in a transmission technology in which modulation of the non-uniform mapping pattern is used.

METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR DECODING A MODULATED SIGNAL

In a method and system for decoding a differential M-ary phase or quadrature amplitude modulated signal, the incoming signal is decoded according to a plurality of different decoding rules, wherein said plurality of decoding rules correspond to different values of a resulting frequency difference or mismatch between a signal frequency and a local oscillator reference frequency. The invention allows to increase a tolerance window for the maximal allowable frequency offset, and thus helps to speed up an initial locking process or to allow for equipment which has a lower tuning granularity.

An error correction circuit includes a first error correction circuit, a second error correction circuit and a controller. The first error correction circuit performs an error correction in a first correction scheme. The second error correction circuit performs an error correction in a second correction scheme. A correction performance of the second correction scheme is lower than a correction performance of the first correction scheme. The controller makes the first error correction circuit perform error correction of a received signal when a capacity of the received signal is smaller than or equal to a processing capacity of the first error correction circuit, and makes the first error correction circuit and the second error correction circuit perform error correction of the received signal when the capacity of the received signal is larger than the processing capacity of the first error correction circuit.
