An image reading apparatus includes an image sensor, a document feeder, and a processor. The second driving device is to move the tray with the documents to a side of the pick-up member using a driving force through a second clutch. The third driving device to move the documents along the document conveying path onto the image sensor using the driving force of the motor. The first and second sensors detect the documents on the document conveying path. The processor controls an operation of the first clutch based on the signals of the first and second sensors.

A conveying path for a document (D) includes a first conveying path (R1) that turns back midway, and a second conveying path (R2) that does not turn back midway. When the first conveying path (R1) is used, a first side is read and the document (D) is discharged with the first side facing downward. When the second conveying path (R2) is used, a second side is read and the document (D) is discharged with the second side facing downward. When the second conveying path (R2) is used, a warning message (MS1) is displayed.

A conveyance path for a document (D) has a first conveyance path (R1) that turns back midway and a second conveyance path (R2) that extends rectilinearly. The imaging device receives reflected light from the document, and outputs read data. The circuitry detects the placement of the document with a change in a read value of the read data output from the imaging device based on the irradiation with the invisible light.
