In the first control, the controller changes a drive speed of the first and second rollers from a first to a second speed faster than the first speed after the document reaches the first roller and before the document passes through the reading position, and changes the first and second rollers drive speed from the second to the first speed after the document reaches the second roller and before the image is completely read. In the second control, the controller maintains the first and second rollers drive speed in a section from a position where the document reaches the first roller to a position where the image reading completes.

A detection device including a first belt stretched over a first pulley and a second pulley, a first sensor being fixed to the first belt, a second belt stretched over a third pulley and a fourth pulley to be arranged in parallel to the first belt, a second sensor being fixed to the second belt, a drive unit configured to generate a driving force for moving the first belt and the second belt, a first rotation shaft, the first pulley being fixed to the first rotation shaft, a second rotation shaft, the third pulley being fixed to the second rotation shaft, and a coupling unit configured to couple the first rotation shaft with the second rotation shaft, in which the coupling unit is configured to adjust an angle as viewed from an axial direction of one of the first rotation shaft and the second rotation shaft.

A control unit of an image reading apparatus acquires, at an upstream position in a medium transportation direction of an abnormality determination area set for a leading-edge area of a medium, a distance WL from a center position in a medium width direction intersecting with the medium transportation direction to one edge in the medium width direction and a distance WR from the center position to the other edge in the medium width direction, and compares a value R that is a ratio between the distance WL and the distance WR or a difference therebetween with a threshold R0 determined in advance.

An image reading apparatus includes a reading processing unit that acquires image data including an image of a document placed on a document placement unit. A first detection processing unit detects a first line image whose width or density exceeds a predetermined first threshold value from the image data. A second detection processing unit detects a rectangular area that is defined by the first line image, included in the image data, and satisfies a predetermined detection condition. A third detection processing unit detects a second line image whose width or density exceeds a second threshold value smaller than the first threshold value from the rectangular area. A fourth detection processing unit detects, as document areas of the respective documents, the rectangular area not divided by the second line image and divided areas included in the rectangular area divided by the second line image.

An image reading apparatus including: an angle detector configured to detect a first state in which a pressure plate is at a first angle with respect to a transparent member and a second state in which the pressure plate is at a second angle smaller than the first angle; a size determiner configured to determine a size of the original in a main scanning direction based on a reading result of a reader; and a controller configured to switch a first size determination mode in which a light source is turned on when a waiting state in which an angle of the pressure plate is larger than the first angle is changed to the first state, and a second size determination mode in which the light source is tuned on when the first state is changed to the second state.

An image reading device includes a background member, an illumination unit opposed to the background member, and a reader. The illumination unit emits light to a recording medium having an image thereon. The reader receives a reflection from the recording medium to read the image. The background member has a facing surface that faces the recording medium. The facing surface includes a reference portion on a center portion in a width direction of the background member. The reference portion has a higher reflectance than an end portion of the facing surface in the width direction.

An image forming apparatus includes an original reading unit; an image forming unit, an image data sending unit; and a mode setting unit for setting one of original reading modes including a first original reading mode for the original reading unit to read originals of the same size, and a second original reading mode for the original reading unit to read originals of different sizes; and a control unit for controlling the original reading unit and the image forming unit so as to execute a copy job including the original reading process and the image forming process, and a sending job including the original reading process and the sending process. The mode setting unit is capable of independently setting, for the copy job and the sending job, a default value indicating the first original reading mode or the second original reading mode.

In a case where a skew of a document being conveyed is detected by a detection unit, an image reading apparatus notifies that documents having different sheet widths may be included in documents stacked on a stacking unit.

An image reading device according to the present disclosures installed in an image forming apparatus includes a document placing table having an image reader, and an auto document feeder (ADF) rotatably supported by the document placing table. The ADF is configured to rotatable between a closed position where an upper surface of the document placing table is uncovered and an opened position where the upper surface is covered. The ADF includes a document tray, a document discharge tray arranged at a lower position than the document tray with a space, a front wall fixed to a front side of the document tray. A cutout part is formed on the front wall, a front side of the space is opened through the cutout part. The ADF further includes a hand grip provided to an upper edge of the cutout part, and the hand grip is used to lift up the ADF from the closed position toward the opened positon.
