An image reader including a document table having a reference point, a first region of a sheet having a predetermined size when a vertex of the sheet is positioned on the reference point, and a second region, a changing mechanism changing a reading position in a sub scanning direction, and a controller configured to control the changing mechanism to change the reading position to a first position such that a distance in the sub scanning direction between the reference point and the first position corresponds to a length of the predetermined sheet size in the sub scanning direction, acquire specific digital data of the second region through image reading in the first position with a light source turned off, compare a particular value of the specific digital data with a criterion value within the second region, and determine a state of a document cover based on the comparison.
System and method of border detection on a document and for producing an image of the document
A system of border detection on a document and for producing an image of the document is provided. In an exemplary embodiment, the system comprises: a frequency specific reflective border on the document; an image capture device; a filter tuned to the frequency of the reflective border; a border detection algorithm; and a processor communicatively linked to the image capture device, to the notch filter, and to the border detection algorithm. The image capture device is configured to capture an image of the document. The processor is configured to apply the filter to the captured image and to produce a second frame. The processor is further configured to apply the border detection algorithm to the second frame to determine a document border mask. The processor is further configured to apply the border mask to the captured image to produce a document image.
SYSTEM AND METHOD OF BORDER DETECTION ON A DOCUMENT AND FOR PRODUCING AN IMAGE OF THE DOCUMENT
A system of border detection on a document and for producing an image of the document is provided. In an exemplary embodiment, the system comprises: a frequency specific reflective border on the document; an image capture device; a filter tuned to the frequency of the reflective border; a border detection algorithm; and a processor communicatively linked to the image capture device, to the notch filter, and to the border detection algorithm. The image capture device is configured to capture an image of the document. The processor is configured to apply the filter to the captured image and to produce a second frame. The processor is further configured to apply the border detection algorithm to the second frame to determine a document border mask. The processor is further configured to apply the border mask to the captured image to produce a document image.
IMAGE READING APPARATUS
An image reading apparatus comprising: an original reading unit configured to read an image of each of multiple originals placed on an original table in batch by a batch-scan; a cropping unit configured to crop an image of each original from an entire image which is read by the batch-scan; an image output unit configured to output a cropped image of each original; and a control unit configured to control the original reading unit, the cropping unit, and the image output unit, wherein the control unit is capable of selectively executing: an inversion multi-crop process in which an image density of an edge of each original is supposed to be higher than an image density of a reading-area outside of the original, and an area to be cropped is determined on the basis of a difference in the image density between the edge and the reading-area outside of the original; and a non-inversion multi-crop process in which an image density of an edge of each original is supposed to be lower than an image density of a reading-area outside of the original, and an area to be cropped is determined on the basis of a difference in the image density between the edge and the reading-area outside of the original.

An image reading device generates, as image data of a reading region, image data for output and image data for size detection, the latter having a lower resolution than the former, discriminates high density lines from the size-detection image data, sets as a target line one of the high density lines. And the image reading device calculates as a width for size detection a width from a reference line to the target line, sets as the size of a document a reference size that has a width closest to the width for size detection, performs image processing on the output image data based on the reference size set as the size of the document, and outputs the processed image data.

A document reading device includes an imaging unit that images a document, a placing portion that includes a first placing portion and a second placing portion and that has a placing surface on which the document is placed, the placing surface being formed by the first placing portion and the second placing portion, and a detector that detects an edge of the document that is placed on the placing surface by using a color difference or a luminance difference between the placing surface and the document. An end portion of the first placing portion adjacent to the second placing portion extends toward the second placing portion beyond an end portion of the second placing portion adjacent to the first placing portion.
