System and method for metallic object detection in a media transport system
Systems and methods for detecting the presence of metallic objects in media to be conveyed in a medium transport system are disclosed. One or more induction sensors are included in the medium transport system to detect the presence of metal in the transported media, with detection signals sent from the sensors to a system processing unit. An ultrasonic detector is employed in some embodiments to output another detection signal. One or more microphones may also be included, for detecting the sound created as the medium is being transported. The system processing unit analyzes various detection signals and analyzes computed sound values from the microphones, to determine the presence and location of metal in the media. A position jam detector may assist in determining jams of the media along the medium transport path.

An image reading apparatus includes feeding rollers configured to come into contact with the lowermost medium of media mounted on a medium mounting section and transport the medium toward a downstream side, separation rollers configured to nip and separate the medium with the feeding rollers therebetween, and a medium detection section configured to detect the medium at a detection position closer to an edge side of the medium than the nip positions of the feeding rollers and the separation rollers in the medium width direction and the detection position overlapping one of the feeding rollers and the separation rollers in a side view of the medium transport path.

An image reading apparatus includes a conveying unit configured to convey a document, a reading unit configured to read an image on the conveyed document, a measurement unit configured to measure a distance from an upper portion of a sheet feeding port for the document to an upper surface of the document, and a control unit configured to, according to the distance measured by the measurement unit, suspend the conveyance of the document by the conveying unit. According to a user operation for reading again the document of which the reading is suspended by the control unit, the conveying unit conveys the document and the reading unit reads the image on the document, and while the document of which the conveyance is suspended is conveyed again, the control unit does not suspend the conveyance of the document based on the distance measured by the measurement unit.
