An image reading apparatus including: a transport path along which a recording material is transported from an upstream location toward a downstream location; and an image reader that reads an image formed on a portion of the recording material in the transport path, the portion being positioned at a specific location on the transport path. A width of the transport path in a thickness direction of the recording material transported along the transport path at the specific location is less than an upstream width and/or less than a downstream width, the upstream width being a width of the transport path at a location upstream of the specific location, the downstream width being a width of the transport path at a location downstream of the specific location.

An image forming apparatus (1) includes an image forming section (6), a plurality of recording paper trays (7a to 7n), storage (5), and a paper feed stage selecting section (12). The image forming section (6) performs advanced printing based on a paper profile. The paper feed stage selecting section (12) selects a recording paper tray (7) from the recording paper trays (7a to 7n) from which recording paper is to be fed to the image forming section (6) based on a printing instruction. When a specific paper profile is not associated with the selected recording paper tray (7), the paper feed stage selecting section (12) notifies the image forming section (6) of a manual setting and causes the image forming section (6) to perform simple printing.

A conveying device includes a sensor to read a sheet to be conveyed, a first conveyor arranged on an upstream side from the sensor in a sheet conveying direction of the sheet, a second conveyor arranged on a downstream side from the sensor in the sheet conveying direction, and correcting circuitry to correct a distance of the sheet having an error detected when the sensor reads the sheet conveyed by the first conveyor and the second conveyor, to an actual distance. The correcting circuitry uses at least a first correction value correcting a distance read by the sensor when the first conveyor conveys the sheet and a second correction value correcting a distance read by the sensor when the second conveyor conveys the sheet.

The plate is openable and closable relative to the document table, and covers the document table in a closed state of the plate. The plurality of invisible light sources irradiate a placement area with invisible light via the document table. The placement area is an area of the document table on which a document is placed. The imaging device receives reflected light from the document, and outputs read data. The circuitry detects the placement of the document with a change in a read value of the read data output from the imaging device based on the irradiation with the invisible light.
