In accordance with an embodiment, an image reading apparatus comprises a carriage, a stepping motor and a processor. The carriage acquires an image. The stepping motor moves the carriage. The processor outputs a first clock signal for driving the stepping motor if a present position of the carriage is unknown and outputs a second clock signal, of which a frequency is higher than that of the first clock signal, for driving the stepping motor if the present position of the carriage can be recognized.

A scanning device configured to scan an electronic device includes a first driving device and a scanner mounted on the first driving device to scan the electronic device. A platform supports the electronic device, and the first driving device drives the scanner to move toward the electronic device placed on the platform and to scan the electronic device. The scanning device can control the first driving device to drive the scanner mounted on the first driving device to move a first preset distance along a first direction from an initial position, and control the scanner to scan the electronic device supported on the platform.

An image reading device includes a DC motor, a roller driven by the DC motor, a reading unit configured to read an image from a document conveyed by the roller, and a control unit configured to control driving of the DC motor. The control unit is configured to detect a power load value of the DC motor. The control unit is configured to determine that the power load value of the DC motor exceeds a first threshold value in a state in which the control unit controls the DC motor to convey the document at a first conveyance velocity, and then, control the DC motor to convey the document at a second conveyance velocity lower than the first conveyance velocity.
