Real time tone mapping of high dynamic range image data at time of playback on a lower dynamic range display

A converter can process image data from input HDR images in real time to compute new metadata about the brightness, contrast, color gamut and/or color volume for the image data to be displayed from each frame. Existing metadata can be ignored. The converter can combine the metadata for a current HDR frame with metadata for a plurality of immediately previous sequential frames to provide parameters for tone mapping. The converter uses these parameters, and characteristics about a lower dynamic range display which will receive output image data, to define a transfer function for converting the input HDR image data into output image data for display. The converter analyzes and tone maps HDR frames at a rate sufficient to allow output video to be generated at a desired frame rate while receiving the image data from frames of the input HDR video at an input frame rate.

A mapped image is computed for the region-of-interest by applying the local mapping function to the raw image.

A dynamic range of luminance of the converted image data is narrower than that of the unconverted image data before the dynamic range conversion. When the input luminance signal indicates an input black reference luminance value, the output luminance signal indicates an output black reference luminance value, and, when the input luminance signal indicates a predetermined reference input luminance value, the output luminance signal indicates a reference output luminance value, the reference output luminance value being a value calculated based on the predetermined reference input luminance value and the output black reference luminance value for observing a print product to be printed by the printing apparatus.

Global Tone Mapping

A system accesses an image with each pixel of the image having luminance values each representative of a color component of the pixel. The system generates a first histogram for aggregate luminance values of the image, and accesses a target histogram for the image representative of a desired global image contrast. The system computes a transfer function based on the first histogram and the target histogram such that when the transfer function is applied, a histogram of the modified aggregate luminance values is within a threshold similarity of the target histogram. The system modifies the image by applying the transfer function to the luminance values of the image to produce a tone mapped image, and outputs the modified image.
