The various implementations described herein describe using an audio stream to identify metadata associated with a currently playing television program. In one aspect, a method is performed at a computing device having processors and memory storing programs to be executed by the processors. The computing device obtains audio description data of a video stream for a media program. The audio description data comprises a synchronized audio narrative describing what is happening visually in the media program. The computing device identifies a set of information items including one or more words in the audio description data. The computing device transmits the words to a server. After the transmitting, the computing device obtains from the server information of content files related to the words. In response to obtaining the information, the computing device causes the information to be displayed on an electronic device that is distinct from the computing device.

An encoder and a re-packager circuit. The encoder may be configured to generate one or more bitstreams each having (i) a video portion, (ii) a subtitle placeholder channel, and (iii) a plurality of caption channels. The re-packager circuit may be configured to generate one or more re-packaged bitstreams in response to (i) one of the bitstreams and (ii) a selected one of the plurality of caption channels. The re-packaged bitstream moves the selected caption channel into the subtitle placeholder channel.

A method of generating references to related videos is provided. Closed caption text of a primary video is analyzed to identify at least one keyword contained within the closed captioned text and a separate pre-determined listing of keywords. A keyword identified within the closed caption text and a context thereof is compared to keyword-context pairings provided within the listing. Information of a reference video related to the primary video is obtained by taking actions required by a rule in the listing associated with a matched keyword-context pairing when the keyword identified from the primary video and the context thereof is determined to match one of the keyword-context pairings in the listing. An annotation of the reference video relative to the primary video is created. A video processing electronic device and at least one non-transitory computer readable storage medium having computer program instructions stored thereon for performing the method are provided.

In one aspect, an example method for outputting an alert indicating a functional state of a back-up video-broadcast system involves a computing device receiving first closed-captioning data that corresponds to a first video-stream; the computing device receiving second closed-captioning data that corresponds to a second video-stream; the computing device making a determination that the received first closed-captioning data and the received second closed-captioning data lack a threshold extent of similarity; and responsive to the determination that the received first closed-captioning data and the received second closed-captioning data lack the threshold extent of similarity, the computing device outputting an alert.

Systems and methods for using an audio stream to identify metadata associated with a currently playing television program are disclosed. A video stream including audio description data is received. A set of information is determined from the audio description data. A request including the set of information is sent to a server remotely located from the client for additional processing. A set of instructions is received from the server. The set of instructions is determined based on the additional processing of the set of information. This application discloses a method for using closed captions to initiate display of related content. A computer system identifies a set of first information in closed captions of a video stream, and searches an identity database using the set of first information as queries. The identity database stores a plurality of identities, and each identity is associated with a name and an importance metric. The computer system identifies one or more identities in the identity database based on the respective importance metrics of the one or more identities, and obtains second information of one or more content files related to the identities identified in the identity database. Upon obtaining the second information, the computer system generates instructions to invoke an application for presenting the second information of the one or more content files to the user of the computing device.

A method, system and computer readable media temporarily display closed captions. An equipment device (e.g., set top box, smart TV or other display device) receives a source signal that includes at least a video signal and a plurality of closed caption entries. Each closed caption entry is associated with a portion of the video signal. The equipment device stores in a memory the plurality of closed caption entries and displays, on a display device interfaced with the equipment device, the video signal. The equipment device also displays, on the display device, a least one prior closed caption entry of the plurality of closed caption entries stored in the memory where the associated portion of the video signal was previously displayed on the display device, wherein the prior closed caption entry is displayed without interrupting display of the video signal.
