System and method for providing data communication services through a CATV tap-off device
In one embodiment, a system for providing data communication services includes a cable television (CATV) tap operably coupled to a CATV network, the CATV tap comprising a tap transceiver. Further, a CATV gateway device is operably coupled to the CATV tap and includes a gateway modem using a first communications standard to communicate with the CATV network, and a gateway transceiver operably coupled to the gateway modem and configured to communicate with the tap transceiver. The system further includes a first device operably coupled to the CATV tap and configured to send or receive device data. The device data includes control data for controlling the first device or monitoring data generated by the first device. The tap transceiver of the CATV tap is configured to communicate the device data between the first device and the gateway transceiver.
Hospitality property management tool and system and method for use of same
A hospitality property management tool and system and method for use of the same are disclosed. In one embodiment of the system, set-top boxes are located in respective rooms at a hospitality establishment. The set-top boxes are joined in network communication with environmental amenities, such as lights and a thermostat that respectively control lighting and temperature. The set-top boxes utilize an unoccupied room profile and occupied room profile to set the environmental conditions, such as lighting and temperature, in the rooms. A guest preference profile may be activated within a room to provide guest-specific environmental conditions in the room associated with the guest.
Scheduling and presenting IPG ads in conjunction with programming ads in a television environment
In one embodiment, a method of displaying content portal advertisements and programming advertisements in a video delivery network environment is disclosed. HANDLING LONG-TAIL CONTENT IN A CONTENT DELIVERY NETWORK (CDN)
A content delivery network has at least a first tier of servers. A content delivery method includes, at a first server in the first tier of servers, obtaining a request from a client for a resource. If the resource is available at the first server or at a peer of the first server, then the resource is served to the client from the first server. Otherwise, it is determined whether the resource is popular, and if the resource is determined to be popular, then the first server obtains the resource and the first server serves the resource to the client. If the resource is determined not to be popular, the client is directed to a second server, not in the first tier of servers, and the second server serves the resource to the client. The second server may be in a second tier of servers or it may be an origin server.
Method and system for presenting media content
A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a system having a controller to detect a selection of media content from a media content source, detect that the selected media content comprises a plurality of media content types, present a plurality of media content type options, each option corresponding to one of the plurality of media content types or combinations thereof, detect a selection from the plurality of media content type options, submit a request to a targeted communication device to accept or decline the selected media content according to the selected media content type option, retrieve one or more metadata pointers from the media content source for retrieving the selected media content responsive to receiving an acceptance from the targeted communication device, and store the one or more metadata pointers and the selected media content type option. Other embodiments are disclosed.

TECHNIQUE FOR SECURELY COMMUNICATING PROGRAMMING CONTENT
A technique for securely transferring content from a first device in a first layer to a second device in a second layer. In one embodiment, the first device is a device in a trusted domain and the second device is outside of the trusted domain. Transfer of protected content to another device may require authentication of the receiving device. A rights file which specifies the rights of the receiving device to use the protected content, according to its security level is also transferred. These rights may concern, e.g., the number of times the receiving device may transfer the protected content to other devices, the time period within which the receiving device may play the protected content, etc. The higher the security level of the receiving device, the more rights accorded thereto.
