A beverage preparation machine (1) has: a water circuit (12,13) for guiding water (2,2′,2″) from a source (11); and a mixing unit (20) fluidically connected to the water circuit (12,13) and to a beverage outlet (23) for dispensing to a consumer cup or mug (5) a beverage (3) formed in the mixing unit (20). The mixing unit (20) has a first module (21) and a second module (22) that are relatively movable from: a distant configuration for inserting an ingredient between the first and second modules (21,22); to a proximate position for combining such ingredient with water (2′) supplied by the water circuit (12,13) so as to form the beverage (3). The directing device (14) has one or more valves (141,142;143,144) that is/are actuated by the relatively moving first and/or second modules (21,22) and that can be opened and closed for controlling a flow of water (2,2′,2″) from the water circuit (12,13) selectively to the mixing unit (20) or to the further unit (30).

A flip lid coffee machine includes a base body, a holding container, a cover pivotally connected to the base body, an actuator, an image sensing camera and a control device. The cover has a pivot end, a free end and a cutting membrane structure arranged between the pivot end and the free end. The cutting membrane structure includes a blade holder, a plurality of the water outlets arranged around a periphery of the blade holder, and a plurality of blades arranged around the periphery of the blade holder and corresponding to the plurality of the water outlets. The actuator is connected between the base body and the pivot end of the cover. The image sensing camera is arranged at the free end of the cover. The present disclosure is directed to a single-serve beverage pod having an additive enclosure and methods of making and using the same. The additive enclosure may serve to hold an additive that, when brewing a single-serve beverage, combines with a beverage precursor to yield a beverage infused with the additive. The present disclosure has recognized the difficulty in introducing a precise amount of desired additive in beverages, as well as the possibility of the additive being absorbed by or adversely affecting the beverage precursor, and provides a solution to making and using a single-serve beverage pod with a precise amount of desired additive.
