A system and method for rendering video content is disclosed. Video content is retrieved from a network and rendered by a graphics processing unit (GPU). The retrieved video content is rendered when a display of the video content is in an application foreground, and stopped when the display of the video content is moved from the application foreground to an application background. The rendering of the video content is then resumed when the display of the video content is returned from the application background to the application foreground.

The method includes: detecting a video switching operation when a first video is currently being played at a first playback progress; pausing playback of the first video in response to the detected video switching operation; obtaining the first playback progress of the first video; determining a second playback progress of a second video according to the first playback progress, the second video being a video that is different from the first video; and playing the second video according to the second playback progress. An action may be scheduled to occur at a first time within the presentation of the media asset, where the action may interrupt the presentation of the media asset. When a current presentation position is approaching the first time, an option to delay the action may be generated for presentation. In response to receiving selection of the option to delay the action, the action may be scheduled to occur at a later second time within the presentation of the media asset.

Methods and apparatus that support implementing a pause, e.g., of a broadcast, on a device, recording the paused program and resuming playback of the paused program on a device associated with a user's account, are described. The pause function allows a user to pause a broadcast on a device and initiate recording of the paused program, e.g., to network storage. The pause initiating device displays a pause indicator indicating that the program output has been paused. A user logging into the user's account from a device other than the device from which the pause was initiated is presented an opportunity to resume the paused playback. Playback is resumed from the pause point on the playback device from which a resume signal is received. Upon resumption of playback on a device other than the device from which the pause was initiated, the pause indicator on the pause initiating device is removed.
