Various arrangements for acquiring network configuration data are presented. In response to a television receiver being booted, the television receiver may determine if it can communicate with a service provider's server. If so, the television receiver may request network configuration data from the television programming broadcast network configuration server via a network interface. The television receiver may receive the network configuration data from the television programming broadcast network configuration server via the network interface. Based on the network configuration data, the television receiver may process television programming data received via the tuner.

Video content is uploaded via the Internet to a video-on-demand (VOD) server identified by a title and a hierarchical address of categories and subcategories for categorizing the title. The VOD server converts and stores the video content at a storage address in a video content database linked to the title. The title is listed in a location of an electronic program guide (EPG) using the same categories and subcategories as in its hierarchical address. Any TV subscriber can access the EPG and navigate through its categories and subcategories to find a title for viewing on the TV. This can enable many new blogging or podcasting-like programs by popular “Hosts” to be self-published on the Internet and readily navigated for display on TV. The EPG can also store TV program addresses as bookmarks and allow them to be shared with other subscribers or with friends and contacts online by sending to their email addresses.

A digital broadcast receiving apparatus capable of executing a function with a higher added value is provided. The control unit is configured to: control the video decoding unit or the display unit so as not to limit viewing of the broadcasting program that the user of the broadcast receiving apparatus desires to view in a case where the response data received by the communication unit indicates a display permission response and both of terminal identification information and authentication information contained in the display permission response respectively coincide with the terminal identification information and the authentication information stored in the authentication information storing unit; and control the video decoding unit or the display unit so as to limit the viewing of the broadcasting program that the user of the broadcast receiving apparatus desires to view in a case where any of the terminal identification information and the authentication information contained in the display permission response does not coincide with corresponding one of the terminal identification information and the authentication information stored in the authentication information storing unit even though the response data received by the communication unit indicates the display permission response.

The application provides a channel switching method for a display apparatus, and a display apparatus. Various arrangements are presented for creating a customized preview video. A television receiver may compile viewing statistics based on a plurality of pieces of content output for presentation. The viewing statistics can include an amount of time spent outputting for presentation each piece of content of the plurality of pieces of content. The television receiver, based on the viewing statistics for the plurality of pieces of content output for presentation, may determine one or more preferred content types and one or more preferred content genres. Using stored electronic programming guide data, a plurality of scheduled content instances may be determined based on the one or more preferred content types and one or more preferred content genres. A plurality of preview clips corresponding to the plurality of scheduled content instances may be accessed. The plurality of preview clips may be assembled to create the customized preview video.
